Cowgirls End Drought in Norman With Bedlam Softball Win
Oklahoma State's fourth-ranked softball team knocked former teammate Kelly Maxwell out of the game and beat second-ranked Oklahoma 6-3 on Friday night at Love's Field in Norman, ending a 26-game losing streak to the Sooners on their home field.
It was OSU's first win since the 1997 NCAA Regional at Reeves Park.
OU had gone 26-0 vs. OSU at Marita Hynes Field but lost the first Bedlam battle at the new Love's Field.
Karli Godwin led the Cowgirl attack on offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and four runs batted in.
OSU fell behind 2-0, but tied the game in the third inning when Godwin doubled down the left field line to score Jilyen Poullard and Tallen Edwards to make it 2-2.
The Cowgirls scored four runs in the next two innings combined.
Micaela Wark hit a solo home run to center field in the fourth to put OSU on top for good at 3-2, and Maxwell left the circle after that half inning.
Maxwell pitched four innings and gave up four hits and three runs, all earned.
OSU added to their lead in the fifth inning off Kierston Deal, as Poullard hit a solo home run and Godwin capped her night with a two-run homer to make it 6-2.
OU got a run back in the sixth inning when Jayda Coleman beat out an infield single and a run scored on a throwing error to make it 6-3.
Oklahoma got a run in each of the first two innings.
In the first, Kinzie Hansen walked with the bases loaded to score Coleman.
In the second, Kasidi Pickering singled to second base to score Rylie Boone.
Oklahoma falls to 45-5 on the season, 21-4 in the Big 12 and now in a tie for first place with Texas.
Oklahoma State improved to 43-8, 20-5 in Big 12 play and just one game back of the Sooners and Longhorns.
All three teams can still win the conference championship, either outright or shared.
The second game of the Bedlam series is Saturday at noon.
