Orioles Hall of Fame inducts Nick Markakis, Terry Crowley, Dick Bowie
For the first time since 2021, the Orioles Hall of Fame is getting bigger.
Baltimore on Friday announced that former right fielder Nick Markakis, former hitting coach and player Terry Crowley and ex-scout Dick Bowie were elected to the Orioles Hall of Fame. The trio will be officially inducted during an on-field ceremony Aug. 24 before the Orioles’ 4:05 p.m. game against the Houston Astros.
As the Orioles appear primed to maintain their standing as one of MLB’s best teams for years to come, Markakis and Crowley were members of previous iterations of great Baltimore baseball. The most recent additions to the Orioles Hall of Fame were Mike Devereaux, J.J. Hardy and Joe Angel in 2021.
Markakis was a pivotal member of the Buck Showalter-era Orioles team that was the AL’s winningest club from 2012 to 2016. The outfielder spent the first nine years of his 15-year career in Baltimore after the club drafted him in 2003’s first round. He ranks in the Orioles’ top 10 in doubles (316, sixth), hits (1,547, seventh), extra-base hits (473, eighth), runs (749, ninth) and RBIs (658, 10th). He won two Gold Glove Awards with the Orioles as a plus defender with a cannon for an arm.
Crowley played 12 of his 15 MLB seasons with the Orioles as a first baseman and designated hitter. He appeared in two World Series with the Orioles and took one plate appearance in the 1970 Fall Classic that Baltimore won. He was the Orioles’ first designated hitter after the AL added the position in 1973. Crowley then spent 16 years as the Orioles’ hitting coach across two stints from 1985 to 1989 and from 1999 to 2010.
Bowie, the winner of the Herb Armstrong Award given to non-uniformed Orioles personnel, joined the team as an associated scout in 1958 and was a full-time area scout in 1968. According to the Orioles’ news release, Bowie, who died in 1981, recommended the club sign Cal Ripken Jr. as an infielder while some other scouts viewed him as more of a pitcher. Bowie also discovered Al Bumbry while playing basketball and was the signing scout for Larry Sheets and more than 100 other players.
