BOCES celebrates teachers, future educators
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Students from all over the Capital Region who are interested in going into the education field got their foot in the door on Thursday. Questar BOCES held its Celebration of Teaching and Learning event at the University at Albany.
Students got the chance to network and learn more about what it takes to become a teacher. This comes as schools across New York State report teacher shortages in several subject areas. Event organizers are hoping it will help alleviate that shortage and get more future educators in the classroom.
"One of the highlights of the day is a roundtable where students can ask current teachers questions about what they do, their career path, how they came into education, and what they like best about education," Questar III Chief School Improvement Officer Terry Bordell said.
"Teachers have helped me so much in my life that I really wanted to go into this field and help kids myself," student Tess Bates said.
State officials estimate New York will need more than 180,000 new teachers in the next decade.
