Postecoglou says not having regular games has proved an issue for Spurs
Ange Postecoglou has said that one of the factors that has proven disruptive for Tottenham over recent months is the fact that they have had much fewer matches than some of their opposition sides.
While the teams involved in Europe and those who went deep in the FA Cup have had to deal with some fixture congestion, Spurs have had the opposite problem.
Due to some of their fixtures being postponed, the Lilywhites have gone for long stretches without any matches. This included a two-week break before they played Arsenal in the North London Derby this Sunday.
Postecoglou pointed to that as one of several disruptions that Tottenham have had over the course of the season, alongside the various injuries they have had to deal with.
Postecoglou wants regular games for Spurs next season
When asked about how he assesses the campaign so far, the Australian told Football.London: “There are things that happened, you’re always assessing how to continue the progress with what we’re dealing with but a lot of it isn’t mapped out. You just don’t know.
“We started the season with a clear idea of the squad we were going to have but were still doing business in the last week of the transfer window, and the challenges since in terms of injuries, a couple of season-ending ones, and absences and disruption to our fixturing means you’re looking at how to overcome the fact we haven’t had a regular run of games.
“How do I really assess what I have at the moment? Some of them are not playing as much as I would have wanted so I can see where we’re at. They’re the kind of things you try to fill the gaps that exist.”
The 58-year-old insisted that the side’s poor results over the last two months have not significantly influenced his opinion on the things Spurs need to improve on.
He continued: “For me, there’s three pillars to building success. One is the environment which we’re on the way to doing but I have some further development there. Our football, again a work in progress but progress, and the squad.
“All those three things haven’t changed my mind about what I think we need to do, but there are certainly some gaps I would have liked to see more evidence from.”
When asked if his side will better reflect the way he wants to play next season, Postecolgou responded: “I hope so, that’s the plan.”

Given that Ange is in his first season and is still in the process of helping the players become well-versed with his system and approach, one can understand why he would have wanted as many matches as possible this season.
