Dive team pulls body from river in CT
Police are investigating after a body was pulled from a river in Norwich on Wednesday.
Authorities began searching the area around 4:30 p.m. when they received the report of a possible body in the Yantic River, according to a statement issued by Sgt. Scott Meikle of the Norwich Police Department.
The person who called in the report was not sure of the location, so patrol officers began searching and requested assistance from the East Great Plain Volunteer Fire Department. Fire crews were asked to use a drone in the search.
As crews were setting up, patrol officers found a body in the river at the base of the Route 2 overpass in the area of 42 Town St., Meikle said.
The police department’s Detective Division was notified and responded to the scene.
The Yantic Fire Department and Taftville Fire Department dive team also responded to remove the body from the water, which was about 8 feet deep, according to Meikle.
Meikle said a preliminary investigation suggests the body belonged to a man.
The body was taken by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who will conduct an autopsy and work on identifying the man.
“Further information will be released once an identification is made and next of kin is notified,” Meikle said.
