2025 Grammy predictions: Place your bets for Record and Song of the Year
Well over 1,000 Gold Derby users have been predicting Album of the Year at the upcoming 2025 Grammys, and now you can place your early bets in two more general field categories: Record of the Year and Song of the Year. We can probably expect a few of the top AOTY contenders to make an impact here with their respective singles. For instance, Taylor Swift is ahead in our AOTY odds for “The Tortured Poets Department,” so her lead single “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone is a strong bet for both ROTY and SOTY. She’s the most nominated songwriter of all time in the latter category with seven citations, but she has yet to win it. Meanwhile, Beyonce is the most nominated artist in the history of ROTY with eight career bids, but she’s also chasing her first win there. She could prevail with “Texas Hold ‘Em,” the Billboard Hot 100 number-one single from her genre-hopping “Cowboy Carter” album.
Ariana Grande only has one past nomination for ROTY (and none for SOTY). She contended for “7 Rings” in 2020, losing to Billie Eilish‘s “Bad Guy.” But this year she’ll be a major threat for “Yes, And?” or “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love).” “Yes, And?” was the lead single from her album “Eternal Sunshine” and debuted at number-one, but “Friends” also topped the chart and lasted longer in the top 10, so that might be her likelier submission to the top categories, especially since it’s the more sentimental song; music about love does well in the top Grammy races. Time will tell.
Speaking of Eilish, she has won ROTY twice (for “Bad Guy” and “Everything I Wanted”) and SOTY twice (for “Bad Guy” and “What Was I Made For?”). Therefore she must be considered a top contender when she releases songs from her new album “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” which is scheduled to drop on May 17. As of this writing no singles have been released from the collection, but expect at least one tune to skyrocket up our odds chart when they come out.
Other contenders include some of the year’s biggest hits so far. Newcomer Benson Boone‘s “Beautiful Things” has peaked at number-two on the Hot 100 and has spent weeks hovering around the top of the chart. Past SOTY nominee for “Take Me to Church” Hozier could make a long-awaited Grammys comeback with “Too Sweet,” which recently became his first ever song to reach number-one. Music legend Billy Joel could also return to the awards stage: “Turn the Lights Back On” is his first new single in 17 years. And you can never rule out Doja Cat, a three-time ROTY nominee whose “Agora Hills” could give her another shot at the title.
