2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Comedy Series: ‘Hacks’ is still in this
Having trouble predicting what will win Best Comedy Series at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority believe the trophy will go FX’s “The Bear.” The other potential nominees, per our racetrack odds, are Max’s “Hacks,” ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows,” FX’s “Reservation Dogs” and Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” — but that could all change in the coming months.
As of this writing, a leading 13 out of our 14 Emmy Experts predict a victory for “The Bear” Season 2: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). The Chicago-set cooking dramedy is coming off of a whopping 10 Emmy wins at the most recent ceremony: series, writing, directing, actor (Jeremy Allen White), supporting actress (Ayo Edebiri), supporting actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), casting, picture editing, sound editing and sound mixing. Will TV academy members find themselves shouting “Yes, Chef!” yet again come September?
The remaining Emmyologist — Jazz Tangcay (Variety) — instead believes “Hacks” Season 3 will prevail. Jean Smart‘s role of legendary Las Vegas stand-up comedian Deborah Vance won her back-to-back lead actress Emmys in 2021 and ’22, but she wasn’t eligible last time because the show was in the midst of a two-year hiatus. “Hacks” also claimed statues in 2021 for writing and directing, and in 2022 for costumes and guest actress Laurie Metcalf.

Also looking strong in our pundits’ rankings is “Abbott Elementary” Season 3. Quinta Brunson leads the ensemble cast as Janine Teagues, an inspirational second grade-teacher who recently joined the school district. Brunson has notably taken home two Emmy Awards for the broadcast network mockumentary, first for writing (2022) and then for acting (2023). The show’s two other wins were for casting and for supporting actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, both in 2022.
Fourth place in our Experts’ rankings is “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, which streamed last summer/fall. This time around, the amateur sleuths played by Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez must uncover who murdered a famous actor (Paul Rudd), and one of the potential suspects (Meryl Streep) just so happens to be the latest love interest of Short’s character. To date, the whodunnit show has claimed four Emmys: guest actor Nathan Lane (2022), sound mixing (2022) and production design (2022 and ’23)
Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Comedy Series category include “The Bear” in 2023, “Ted Lasso” in 2022 and ’21, “Schitt’s Creek” in 2020, “Fleabag” in 2019 and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” in 2018. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
