TEACHING EXCELLENCE: EDUCATION DISTRICT II FETES OUTSTANDING TEACHERS, OTHERS
The Lagos State Education District II has held its 18th Annual Merit Award with the recognition and awards of excellence bestowed on teaching and non-teaching staff of the district for their excellent performance and dedication to duty.
Speaking at the award ceremony held recently at Emmanuel Primary School, Ogudu, Ojota with the theme, “Recognize Dedication and Inspiring Excellence”, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Balogun enjoined the teachers to brace up, update their skills and embrace artificial intelligence to be well equipped for future challenges, adding that Lagos State is the best when it comes to education in Nigeria.
According to him, “There is a need for our students to be trained and repositioned to compete with their counterparts across the globe and be ready for the emerging world. This is a major reason we need to keep upgrading ourselves as 21st-century teachers equipped with the universally applied skills which enhance ways of thinking, learning, working and living in the world.”
“I enjoined teachers to be up and doing in the daily duties and responsibilities entrusted to you by the state government, entrusted to you by being a mother to all our students, entrusted to you as an administrator in our schools, entrusted to you because we see through you in all our schools, and there will always be a way to celebrate ourselves”, he added.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, Mrs. Anike Adekanye stated that the District has continually raised the bar of performance towards achieving the T.H.E.M.E.S plus agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration for giving it a conducive environment for learning and that is why the teachers are being celebrated.
She informed that the District is looking into identifying and recognising those teachers and administrators who have performed excellently well in their various fields, subjects and cadres while celebrating their efforts in driving learners’ achievements and success.
The Tutor-General, however, expressed appreciation to the teaching and non-teaching staff of the district and the wonderful school administrators for their support and for making the students realise that the importance of education cannot be over-emphasised. “And that is why in Lagos State, we can always say that we have the complete students”, she said.
About 90 teaching and non-teaching members of staff were awarded in various categories. Mr. Olaoye Oyekunle Toyese of Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu and Mrs Otayomi Esther Remilekun of Ajekunle Senior High School, Kosofe emerged as 2022 and 2023 Best Teachers in the senior category respectively while Mrs Oredola Mary Orebukola of Community Junior High School, Alapere and Mrs Odumusi Oluwakemi of Eva Adelaja Girls’ Junior Secondary School, Bariga and were awarded 2022 and 2023 Best Teachers in junior category respectively.
The gifts include home appliances such as televisions, refrigerators and cooking utensils.
