No. 14 Dulaney girls lacrosse dominates from start to finish in 17-8 win over No. 13 Catonsville
Elena Emde won 11 draws and had three goals and two assists to lead Dulaney to a 17-8 victory over Catonsville on Tuesday night.
The two teams will meet again at Dulaney on Monday in the Baltimore County championship game.
Dulaney won 18 of 25 draws overall, and when Emde wasn’t collecting them, her teammates were. Becca Melito had four ground balls after draws, Sarah Crowley had two and London Krafft had one for the winners.
“I was picking up that a lot of what she was doing,” Emde said. “She was kind of using me to dictate where it was going and so with that, I just kind of switched up my stuff. Instead of pulling I kind of dug a lot more and that really helped me with that”
The offensive juggernaut included five girls with hat tricks.
In addition to Emde, Heidi Schmidt (four goals, one assist), Crowley (three goals), Emma Genter (three goals) and Mia Connor (three goals, two assists) had stellar offensive games.
Catonsville was led by Casey Fisher (three goals, one assist) and Kaitlyn Welsh (three goals).
“For our team, there is not just one person scoring. It’s really a well-rounded offense and defense,” Emde said. “We really worked the ball around today, we got a lot of different shots, we got a lot of different assists which was really great.”
“I was so proud of them. The passing, the ball movement and off-ball movement was just very smooth today,” Dulaney coach Kristi Korrow said.
Emde and the Lions won six of the first seven draws in the first quarter when they built a 6-1 lead.
“Elena is a senior and she’s been doing it awhile. Very smart and she’ll come off and ask us and she’ll tell us what’s going on and try to get to it,” Korrow said.
Schmidt and Crowley had two goal each in the opening quarter.
“We definitely wanted to start off strong,” Emde said. “We know this team is really good. They’re definitely a comeback team for sure and so we really wanted to make sure we were getting that big lead in the beginning and we just carried that momentum throughout and it gave us a lot of confidence to win.”
Fisher had the only Catonsville goal during a first quarter in which Dulaney held possession for over nine minutes.
“That is difficult because we excel in the unsettled situations and we pressure very well, but when you are doing it for 10 minutes at a time, it’s hard, you get tired,” Catonsville coach Cantey Bailey said. “They did a great job on their ride, their redefend was really good.”
Five different players scored for the Lions in the second quarter when the lead ballooned to 13-2.
“Top to bottom today, I think it was our most complete game so far,” Korrow said. “We always talk about it’s not where we start our season, it’s where we end our season. It’s just nice that they are really kind of coming up to that crest and like finally putting the pieces together a bit more and today they really showed that,”
“They all were threats today,” Bailey said. “They were able to see their open player, any time we slid, they found that open girl and were able to get that shot, so they did a great job.”
Catonsville scored the final five goals of the game in the last eight minutes to make the final score semi-respectable.
Bailey is looking forward to the rematch with Dulaney before regionals.
“It’s a competitive game before the postseason starts and that’s what you kind of want so you don’t have all that time off,” she said. “So it will be good to be in that and it will be good to see them again.”
