Iran officially begins building wall along its border with Afghanistan
Iranian authorities have announced the establishment of teams along the Afghan border to implement a border blockade plan. The estimated cost of this plan is reported to be “three billion dollars.”
Iran’s Irna-a news agency, affiliated with the Islamic Republic of Iran, reported in a dispatch on Monday, April 28th, citing Iranian officials that “four border engineering groups of the ground forces have entered the region to implement the eastern border blockade plan with Afghanistan.”
Iranian authorities previously discussed this plan, which includes a four-meter concrete wall, barbed wire, and fencing covering approximately the entire border strip with Afghanistan (302 kilometres).
The Taliban administration has so far shown no reaction to Iran’s connection to this plan.
The escalating tensions and violence perpetrated by militants, including ISIS, in the region, particularly in Afghanistan and Iran, could be one of the reasons why Iran is seeking to blockade its border with Afghanistan.
The increasing threat of violence and instability in neighbouring Afghanistan likely contributes to Iran’s efforts to bolster border security and protect its territorial integrity.
