UN emphasized urgency of protective measures for Shia community in Afghanistan
The Office of the Deputy Mission of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has responded to the deadly attack yesterday in Herat, which targeted worshippers as they were leaving the mosque, emphasizing the urgency of protective measures for the Shia community in Afghanistan.
In a statement posted on Tuesday, April 30th, on the social network, “The investigation and response to the perpetrators and protective actions for the Shia community in Afghanistan are urgently needed.”
UNAMA has emphasized the protection of the Shia community in Afghanistan, stating that in the attack yesterday in Herat, western Afghanistan, worshippers were targeted by armed gunmen as they were leaving the “Imam Zamana Mosque” in the Guzara district of Herat province, resulting in the deaths of six people, including a child and a woman, and injuring two others.
This attack has prompted widespread reactions, with officials from the previous government, including former President Hamid Karzai and former Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, condemning it.
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kabul has also condemned this attack and expressed readiness to cooperate with the interim government in “combating terrorism.”
The perpetrators of this attack have not yet been identified, and no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Shia worshippers in Herat.
