Sports briefs: Marin Academy claims league title in boys golf
Charlie Hansen shot an even-par 72 at Harding Park in San Francisco on Monday to lead the Marin Academy boys golf team to the Bay Counties League title.
The Wildcats, who went undefeated in league this season, also got a 78 from Dylan Siegel and an 80 from Charlie Wilhelm as they clinched a spot in next week’s North Coast Section Division II Championship by way of the victory. The NCS D-II championship is being held at Peacock Gap in San Rafael next Monday.
Prep softball
Marin Catholic got RBIs from Morgan Carlson, Anna Held, and Selena Peña in the third inning en route to a 3-1 victory against Archie Williams on Monday.
Carlson got the scoring started for MC (9-7-1, 7-6 MCAL) with a triple to drive home Izzy Larson, who led off the inning with a walk. Held and Peña followed with back-to-back singles to give Peña, also the starting pitcher, all the runs she would need.
MC, which was powerless to stop Archie Williams from stealing bases in the first meeting, simply didn’t allow many baserunners this time around. Peña struck out 15 hitters in seven innings, allowing two hits and one earned run.
Amelia Richer drove in the lone run for the Peregrine Falcons (14-6, 9-4).
- Tiana Bersaglieri stole home with two outs in the sixth inning to score the winning run as Novato won its first league game of the season, 4-3 against Tam on Monday. Claire Hannan went the distance, allowing four hits while striking out five. Allie Tubach had two hits and Fran Calle had a hit for the Hornets. Ava Lee hit a solo home run for Tam (4-15, 1-12) and Eden Clark struck out 11 hitters.
Mountain biking
Redwood High’s Scout Wellmeier and Archie Williams’ Simon Hewett scored individual wins, while the Giants topped the overall team standings in the Division I competition at Saturday’s Granite Bay Grinder mountain bike race.
The Peregrine Falcons placed second to the Giants, with Tam in third place. Marin Academy and San Domenico placed third and fourth, respectively, in D-II. Branson, Marin Catholic, San Marin and San Rafael also sent teams to the competition.
Wellmeier won the varsity girls race (1 hour, 26 minutes, 46.70 seconds), ahead of teammate Charlotte Philkill in third place. San Domenico’s Quinn Joyce placed sixth, followed by the Falcons’ Alexandra Stein in seventh place, and Tam’s Johanna Nesbit in eighth place.
Hewett won the varsity boys race (1 hour, 17 minutes, 46.22 seconds) on a challenging course that started in the sand and continued on a rough trail that saw a few pileups. Other top local riders in the division were San Marin’s Te’Ah Hirschfeld, Archie Williams’ Noah Bott and Blake Doll, and Tam’s Jacob Camposano, in 10th-13th place, respectively.
The NorCal Cycling League continues Saturday at Stafford Lake in Novato for the final race before the championships May 18 at Six Sigma Wineries. Hewett is leading the varsity boys competition after three races. Philkill is second, 10 points behind Camille Smith of Rio Americano, in the girls varsity season standings.
