The scores were soaring at StoneTree Golf Club in Novato on a windy day when even the ducks had trouble flying straight. Tam High’s Ben Friedman tamed the wind, however, to claim low medalist honors and lead the Red-tailed Hawks to the MCAL boys championship Monday.
“It feels good,” said Friedman, the MCAL Golfer of the Year. “It was a grind out there, but I’m happy to get it done today.”
Friedman, with a 2-under 70, was the only golfer to break par. Teammate Hayden Thill placed second at 6-over 78, ahead of Marin Catholic’s Theo Anderson (80) in third place.
The Red-tailed Hawks rounded out their scoring with Abe Willard (84) tied for sixth place and last year’s MCAL champion Max Berg tied for 11th place at 13-over.
“The pin locations were tough,” said Friedman, who was 5 over to place third last year at StoneTree. “Every pin was tucked in the corner. A lot of playing good today was not pin hunting. Just hit it to the middle of the green.”
Thill added, “This course is narrow and tough. There were a lot of penalties and errors.”
Tam hoisted the pennant with a low score of 406 to dethrone defending champion Redwood, which placed second at 426, led by fifth-place finisher Sam Sumski’s 11-over 83. The Giants’ Brody Root and Jack Mount were tied for sixth at 12-over 84 with Marin Catholic’s Luca DeNunzio. The Giants’ Cole O’Connell’s 15-over left him tied for 16th place with Branson’s Carl Smith, but it was good enough to help lift Redwood over third-place Marin Catholic (427) by the slimmest of margins.
Host Terra Linda (452) and the Branson School (456) rounded out the five team scores. Kaden Martin (84), tied for sixth, led the Trojans. Branson leader Aria Saluja (85) was tied at 11th with Berg and Marin Catholic’s Mason Sylvester. The Bulls’ Barry Liu and the Trojans’ Sean Madden were tied for 14th at 14-over.
San Rafael’s Kai Payne turned in an impressive card to finish at 10-over 82 under tough conditions for fourth place in the individual standings. San Marin’s Noah Duncan (88) tied for 18th with Terra Linda’s Derek Newhall. Archie Williams’ Calvin Cavanna (95) tied for 26th and Novato’s Sam Ojeda (102) was 30-over to finish 31st.
Tam and Redwood now have some time off before the North Coast Section Division I tournament on May 13 at Tilden Park Golf Course. They’ll be joined by the top 18 individual qualifiers from the NCS D-II tournament, to be held Monday at Peacock Gap Golf Course.
“NCS is going to be tough,” Thill said. “But if we all play really good, we can do it.”
