8:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘The Voice’!” In episode 14, the playoffs premiered. On Team Dan + Shay Madison Curbelo, Karen Waldrup and Tae Lewis were chosen to advance to the live shows. On Team Legend Nathan Chester, Zoe Levert, and Bryan Olesen moved on. Let’s see who makes it from Team Reba and Team Chance!
8:02 p.m. – The night started with Reba and Anthony meeting with her first artist of the round, her last-standing country vocalist Josh Sanders. He chose “Black Water” by The Doobie Brothers in order to take a step back from modern country and give this ode to his father’s memory instead. Anthony helped Josh “play around” with the song a little bit to bring something new to it rather than just rest on the strength of his original take on it. Following the performance, John liked “how soulful” the performance was and he called it “a big statement,” Chance said he has “amazing pitch control” and liked his stage performance, and Dan sees him as someone “Reba can count on.” Reba called it his “best performance” and is grateful that they made the end of the song what they discussed in rehearsal.
8:13 p.m. – Chance worked with Meghan first on Nadège‘s version of “Clocks” by Coldplay. Meghan advised that they bring back some of the original melody to the song because it’s such a well known song that you want the audience to connect to it, but Chance thinks that her variation is one of her biggest assets. Reba called her tone “rich” and Shay mentioned her “silky voice.” John was concerned with the “melodic alterations” to the original song and thinks it was a bit “distracting,” but Chance called it one of the best performances of the show and a “spiritual experience.”
8:20 p.m. – Justin & Jeremy Garcia brought “Castle on the Hill” by Ed Sheeran to the rehearsal space because it “brings [them] back to [their] family.” Anthony gave them some advice about how to change a note when they find themselves without the proper breath to support it and then was impressed with the way they rebounded immediately in their second pass of the song. Following their stage performance, Dan said that they have “contagious” energy, John said it’s “by far the tightest” that they sound, and Reba let everyone know that they took the notes they were given in rehearsal and even improved upon them.
8:32 p.m. – After “tricking” Dan + Shay, Chance got his first chance to work with Kyle Schuesler on “Something in the Orange” by Zach Bryan, a song he says he picked because it’s his sister’s favorite. Meghan’s “one note only” for Kyle was to “open your eyes,” stressing that it’s important for him to connect to the audience and the camera. Reba called his performance “sweet and pretty,” Shay thought it was “phenomenal” because it was his version of the song, and Chance referred to his “fervor with the lyrics” as one aspect that made him proud.
8:43 p.m. – For Jackie Romeo‘s take on Brandi Carlile’s “The Story,” Anthony and Reba worked with her connecting to the lyric through the way she expresses her emotion to the audience. After taking the stage, Chance appreciated “the passion” of her delivery, Dan liked that her stage movement was intentional, and John liked that she gave a “complete package” overall. Speaking through tears, Reba told her that she handled the song “great” and she was proud.
8:56 p.m. – Next up for Team Chance was Serenity Arce who brought her mom into the rehearsal space while she worked on “Lose You to Love Me” by Selena Gomez. Meghan liked the song choice and was able to talk her through the changes in pitch that the song takes a voice. Shay couldn’t believe that she was able to tell the story of that song at such a young age and Dan was impressed with her “conviction.” John added that she made an “emphatic statement” with that song and Reba agreed that she “checked off every box.” Chance said she “kills it every week” and made some “big moments” before telling her that she “deserves to be in the lives.”
9:07 p.m. – Reba’s playoff pass went to L. Rodgers so this was the first time working together since the battle round. L. chose “All I Know So Far” by Pink because it straddles genre in the same way that she wants to with her career. Anthony gave her advice about mic use and Reba was impressed with her chances going into the performance. Shay called L. the most passionate person on her team, John referred to her as a “saturated” and “complete” artist who knows who she is, and Reba closed by noting how much she liked her performance style.
9:19 p.m. – Chance and Meghan worked with RLetto on Chance’s own song with Justin Bieber “Holy.” Meghan liked all of his riffs, but said that there’s one line that she wants him to keep the same. John was a fan of the song choice because it felt “comfortable” for him and Dan commented on the “warmth and richness” in his tone that “exudes star power.” Chance admitted that they didn’t get to hear the full scope of RLetto’s range, but he’s still proud of his performance.
9:30 p.m. – Asher HaVon chose “Titanium” by Sia for his next performance. Anthony gave the idea that Asher pass through the song with just the piano for the whole song and they all decided that it was a plus to do it half that way and then kick in the bass and drum for the second half. Shay called the performance a “Grammy moment” for Asher and Dan thinks he has a “strong potential to win.” John was reminded of Whitney Houston’s ability to change a song into a soul song and called Asher “divine.” Chance noted that he’d “100% send” him to the lives. Reba said that Asher “commands the stage” and was proud to hear the other coaches give him such high praise.
9:41 p.m. – Chance closed the round with Maddi Jane and her rehearsal of Rihanna’s “Stay.” Meghan referred to Maddi as a “powerhouse” and thinks that she “made it look easy.” Reba exclaimed that Maddi is “priceless” because of the control she has over her voice, Shay called her a “straight diamond” not a “hidden gem,” and John said that it was a “masterclass” of intention. Chance complimented her on how she carries herself with “cool confidence.”
9:52 p.m. – Carson called Team Chance out first to hear the results of which three would move on to the live shows. Chance’s decision was to keep Serenity Arce, Maddi Jane, and Nadège.
9:56 p.m. – Reba was the last of the coaches to announce her three finalists to advance. She chose Asher HaVon, Josh Sanders, and L. Rodgers.
