Sports briefs: Marin Academy girls claim lacrosse title
Elsa Anderson scored four goals as the Marin Academy girls lacrosse team claimed the Bay Counties League West championship Friday with a 9-5 victory over University in San Francisco.
The Red Devils scored three goals to open the title showdown before the Wildcats closed out the first half with a 4-0 run. Harper Potts and Kenzie Cain combined for six saves for Marin Academy, which held University scoreless during the third quarter.
Steph Zola and Sadie Goodenough each had three draw controls for Marin Academy, while Cece Dickinson tallied four ground balls. Paige Frederickson forced three turnovers to harass the Red Devils.
The Wildcats will find out their next match after Sunday’s North Coast Section seeding meeting. The NCS tournament is scheduled to start Tuesday.
College track
Adrian Aguirre became the first Dominican University athlete to win an individual event at the PacWest Championships following his victory in the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday.
Aguirre turned in the fastest time in the prelims at 14.25 seconds then followed that up with a time of 14.32 to win the event.
Wakilli Bennett also had a strong showing for the Penguins, placing second in the men’s 100 and third in the 200. The Penguins finished sixth as a team on the men’s side and eighth on the women’s side. Caytlin Capulong set a personal- and school-record on 33.29 meters in the javelin to place ninth.
Prep baseball
Wilson Wendt scattered seven hits and allowed one unearned run to guide Branson to a 7-1 win against University on Saturday. Thomas Lardner paced the Bulls (7-14) with three hits while Mo Jacoby and Treyvor Mathews had two RBIs apiece. Branson broke the game open with a four-run third inning.
- Novato surrendered seven runs in the bottom of the fourth and was unable to finish off a late rally in a 7-6 loss to Pinole Valley on Saturday. Cash Campbell hit a two-run homer for Novato (14-8) and Gio Castaing had two hits.
Prep softball
Morgan Carlson drove in six runs as Marin Catholic rolled to a 21-0 win against Terra Linda in five innings Friday. Carlson had four hits, including a triple and a home run, and scored twice.
MC (8-7-1, 6-6 MCAL) also got four hits from Grace Berringer and Adriana Livengood. Berringer drove in three runs and Livengood drove in two more.
- Paige Murphy had more hits at the plate than she allowed in the circle as Archie Williams defeated Berkeley 6-0 Saturday. Murphy had three hits, an RBI, and two runs while limited the Yellow Jackets to two hits over seven innings. Kennedy Dunsing, Amelia Richer, and Emma Freed had two hits apiece for the Falcons (14-5). Richer also added two RBIs.
- Claire Hannan pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out five as Novato defeated Piner 14-8 on Friday. Ellie Fox had two hits, including a three-run double to spark a six-run fourth inning. Tiana Bersaglieri had two hits, including a triple, and scored three times for the Hornets (3-19).
- San Marin built up a big lead Friday against Windsor but was unable to hold it, eventually falling 13-12 in eight innings. The Mustangs (10-9) scored three times in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings but gave up eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings at 11-11.
