Sports Briefs: Chapman MVP as Marin Academy claims BCL boys lacrosse crown
Marin Academy clinched the Bay Counties League-West boys lacrosse championship with a 13-5 victory over University in San Francisco on Friday. The Wildcats’ Logan Chapman was named the tournament MVP.
Marin Academy defenseman Blake Weaver went the length of the field for his second goal of the season and Fischer Burke ignited the offense on faceoffs.
The Wildcats defeated the Red Devils, 10-1, in a regular-season matchup on March 13. Marin Academy now prepares for the North Coast Section tournament, slated to start on Tuesday.
Prep baseball
Scoreless through the first five innings, Archie Williams broke out with a five-run sixth inning en route to an 8-3 victory over host Tam on Friday. Jackson Oliver-Roa had three RBIs and scored twice for the Peregrine Falcons, while senior Max Lefferts singled and doubled for two RBIs.
Starter Sam Black struck lut six batters and walked three as he worked into the sixth inning for the Falcons.
Devin Curtis had two hits including a double for the Red-tailed Hawks, who finished with six hits.
Archie Williams (11-9, 9-5 MCAL), Tam (11-10, 8-6) and Marin Catholic (10-11, 8-6) are all battling for the fourth and final MCAL playoff berth. The Falcons play a pair of games against league leader Redwood next week, while the Wildcats and Hawks square off in a set that will likely decide the playoff picture.
- Novato kept Marin Catholic off the scoreboard in Friday’s 2-0 victory. Carter Capobianco, Novato made the most of three hits and a pair of Marin Catholic errors. Jude Baker, Jayden Lee and Jake Lyall each singled for the Wildcats.
- San Marin put up nine runs in the fifth inning to break open a tight contest as the Mustangs powered their way to a 13-6 victory over host San Rafael on Friday. With the win, the Mustangs keep pace with rival Novato in a second-place tie as they prepare for a two-game showdown in the final days of the regular season next week. Sophomore Matthew Baldino had the big bat for the Mustangs with a home run and three RBIs, while junior Joey Cipollina was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. Cole Chamberlain doubled, tripled and had two RBIs for San Marin. For the Bulldogs, junior Dexter Jackson led a seven-hit attack with a single and a double and two RBIs.
- Sophomore Thomas Martinez struck out nine batters in a five-hit complete game as Terra Linda picked up its first win of the season, 5-1 against the Branson School at College of Marin on Friday. Senior Jonah Truett had three hits and two RBIs for the Trojans, while sophomore Augie Hamann, freshman Kelley Fouts and junior Kaan Black each had two base hits. Junior Hayden Biesiadecki doubled and singled.
- San Domenico fell to Urban, 13-3, on Friday. The third-place Panthers (4-7, 2-4 BCL) are scheduled to host second-place Lick-Wilmerding on Saturday.
College baseball
A three-run seventh inning for Los Medanos clinched a 10-6 victory over College of Marin in Friday’s regular-season finale. The Mariners (26-14, 15-6 BVC) got a solid start, powered by a two-run homer from Benny Nazario in the third inning, but Los Medanos scored five runs in the fourth inning for a 7-5 lead. Jacob Anteneh scored in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Mariners’ deficit to just one run, but Los Medanos held on to complete a three-game sweep of Marin.
Boys golf
Butchie Long and Ben Nguyen each shot 46 at Peacock Gap Golf Club to pace San Domenico past Urban, 195-243, Thursday in the regular-season finale for both schools. The Bay Counties League championship tournament will be held Monday at Harding Golf Course.
College swimming
College of Marin’s Lilly Weires took first place in the 400 IM (5:06.67) and second in the 100 free (55.23) at the Coast Conference Championships last weekend. The Mariners’ Becca Janssen was third in the 100 breast (1:13.06).
