Dutchess Co. work program gifts cars to participants
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Seven people in Dutchess County received a gently used car to help them get to work. The donation was made possible by a partnership between the Department of Community and Family Services and the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board. The seven individuals completed the “Way to Work” employment empowerment program that helps residents address transportation issues.
The overall goal of the program is to help participants take steps toward financial independence. The Department of Community and Family Services works to transition participants in the program to work and off Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
Residents receiving or eligible for public assistance can participate in the program that offers financial literacy seminars, car care seminars, financial boot camps and credit score workshops, and vehicle insurance and registration services. Participants also take part in training for car care and defensive driving. The vehicles come from local used car dealers.
Department of Community and Family Services Commissioner Jaar Marzouka said residents who are committed to a better life have found success in the program for over 20 years. "Our department is so proud of the program and the families it has empowered, as their examples of the lives DFCS enhances each day," she said.
