The Angels broadcast was absolutely livid at the MLB replay center when the game ended on an obvious missed call
MLB replay has been around in some capacity since 2008, and it remains a perplexing disappointment 16 years later. At times, it almost seems like the replay center in New York will look for any excuse to not overrule the umpires on the field.
Wednesday afternoon was certainly one of those times for the Los Angeles Angels.
With the Angels down a run in the ninth inning and two outs, it appeared that Jo Adell had safely stolen second base. Yet, the call on the field was out, which ended the game pending review.
Replays would show that Adell clearly got his foot into second before the tag was applied. So, you can imagine the shock from the Angels broadcast when the replay decision came back as “stands.”
Instead of having the tying run in scoring position, the Angels were left with a 6-5 loss to the Orioles.
Angels broadcasters Wayne Randazzo and Mark Gubicza were in disbelief as the decision came back, and they blasted the replay center, calling the decision a “joke.”
Given that New York issued the ruling of “stands,” it didn’t see enough to overturn the call on the field. But I mean, that was pretty clear cut. MLB issued a statement to explain the decision, but it really didn’t say much of substance:
“After viewing all relevant angles, the replay official could not definitively determine that the runner touched second base prior to the fielder applying the tag.”
MLB fans were justifiably upset that replay somehow managed to miss an easy call like that. It’s just a brutal way to end a game.
