My grandmas had thick hair and no grays into their 60s – I made a DIY recipe with their tips, my locks are so silky
A BEAUTY guru has raved about having transformed their hair using a DIY recipe that kept their grandmothers from graying.
They stopped using conditioner after being impressed with how silky the homemade haircare product left their locks.
The now-deleted Reddit user took to the Indian Skincare Addicts forum to reveal a beauty hack they learned about two years earlier.
“I sat with both sides’ grandmothers to find some holy grail of oils,” they wrote on Reddit.
“To put in perspective both of my grandmas had thick non colored black hair and no grays till their 60s.
“I have used it for 1 year, consistent use has made my hair silky.
“I have stopped using conditioner, very little dandruff this winter.”
They shared the list of ingredients for the haircare product which involved several cold-pressed oils.
One cup of castor oil, one cup of coconut oil, half a cup of olive oil, and one cup of sesame oil.
The list continued with 1-2 tablespoons of groundnut oil, ⅓ a cup of Amla oil, ⅛ cup of almond oil, and 10 drops of essential oil – either eucalyptus, peppermint, or tea tree.
They also recommended including a handful of washed vetiver roots and dried amla powder, rose petals, and bhringraj leaves or powder, a handful of fresh curry leaves, and one tablespoon of methi seeds.
“Heat 0.5 cup coconut and 0.5 cup sesame oil together and then add methi seeds and curry leaves, fry till curry leaves are dried,” they said.

“In a glass jar add vetiver roots, add all oils including curry oil.
“Then add all dry ingredients.”
They recommended leaving the mixture in the sun for at least one week before using it.
They warned that only dry ingredients should be left in the final mix and said it should be shaken well before use.
“If u can’t find amla oil pure- add amla powder in hot oil (coconut/sesame),” they said.
“It takes hardly 10 mins to make the oil, you can order everything from Amazon.”
Dabur Amla hair oil is priced at $13.69 on Amazon, where over 1,000 customers have bought it in the past month.
Vetiver Root costs $15 and a bag of dried curry leaves is $4.20.
“I heat the oil to just bearable hot, apply it to hair, let it sit for 6 hrs, and wash it off,” the Reddit user said.
“I oil once a week or more if the hair feels dry. I use baby shampoo so I wash it twice.”
A stream of responses to the post came from people thanking the beauty guru for sharing the recipe and others saying their own family uses similar DIY treatments.
“Curry leaves are what reversed my greying hair in my teens almost 40% of my hair had gone grey,” one person wrote.
“Used to boil and char curry leaves in coconut oil and apply it, almost a year later I had not even one grey hair.”

According to Healthline, curry leaves are “rich in vital nutrients” and many people swear by them for healthy hair.
However, there is a lack of scientific research to back up claims they can be beneficial.
Small studies examining amla oil have shown that it boosts hair growth in animals, but further research is needed to find out the results for humans.
