Turkish police detain over a thousand refugees in the past month
Turkish media, citing Turkish officials, reported that over the past month, authorities in Edirne have detained 1,096 “illegal migrants,” including Afghan citizens.
According to reports, these migrants were detained yesterday, Wednesday, April 24th, and were referred to the Edirne Migration Directorate.
Local authorities in Edirne stated that 54 of these individuals have been detained on charges related to human trafficking and drug trafficking.
It’s worth noting that in recent months, the expulsion and detention of Afghan migrants from countries like Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey have increased.
According to reports, most of the detained migrants are citizens of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Previously, Turkish media had reported on the detention of hundreds of Afghan refugees due to a “lack of residency permits in Turkey.”
The Turkish Ministry of Interior has emphasized that in 2023, 68,687 Afghan migrants were detained in the country, with some of them being deported.
Meanwhile, Turkish authorities have announced that operations to combat the entry and detention of illegal migrants throughout Turkey will continue.
