Empire State Plaza exhibit raising awareness of sexual violence
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Wednesday was International Denim Day. It's meant to raise awareness of sexual assault and show support of survivors.
Pairs of jeans were on display in the Empire State Plaza concourse on Wednesday and Thursday to highlight the prevalence of sexual violence and give survivors a voice.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of women and almost one-third of men have experienced sexual violence. International Denim Day is meant to educate the public and empower survivors to seek support.
"We want survivors to know it doesn't matter what your background is," St. Peter's Crime Victim Services Dir. Lindsey Crusan-Muse said. "We are here for you. We believe you. We will hear you, and it was not your fault."
There are free and confidential resources for survivors who need help. Call 1-800-942-6906 or text 844-997-2121 to reach New York State's 24-hour hotline.
Conversations are available in most languages.
