Explosion in Kandahar kills three children
Local officials in Kandahar province have announced that three children lost their lives due to an explosion of leftover munitions from the war in this province, while two other children were injured.
According to local officials in Kandahar province, the incident occurred on Tuesday in the village of Shakhki in the Mahrouf Zaman district.
Officials said the two fatalities in this incident were two brothers and a cousin.
According to reports, the explosion occurred when children were playing with a rocket-propelled grenade, and the injured were transferred to the Mirwais Hospital in Kandahar city.
This comes as unexploded mines have claimed victims, including children, in various parts of the country for years.
Earlier, following an explosion of an unexploded mine in the Arghistan district of Kandahar province, one child was killed, and another was injured.
According to a report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Afghanistan is one of the most heavily mined and explosive remnants of war (ERW) contaminated countries in the world, with 85% of casualties being children.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also emphasized that Afghanistan is the most mine-contaminated country in the world, stating that about 60% of mine explosion victims in Afghanistan are children.
