Sports Briefs: MCAL baseball playoff race tightens after thrilling day on diamond
A three-run fifth inning carried host Archie Williams past Tam, 4-3, in the first of two meetings this week. The win draws the Peregrine Falcons (10-9, 8-5 MCAL) and Red-tailed Hawks (11-9, 8-5) into a three-way tie for the fourth and final MCAL playoff berth. The Falcons’ Jack Evans was 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs and two RBIs. Falcons winning pitcher Leo Hendricks struck out seven batters and scattered five hits in a complete game effort.
Redwood junior Eli Solem blasted a solo home run and Jack Hanna was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. On the mound, starter Hanna struck out six batters and walked two while he gave up three hits and was charged with three runs as he worked into the fifth inning. Redwood and Archie Williams are tied with Marin Catholic (10-10, 8-5), with three games left in the regular season.
- Novato tipped the scales against Marin Catholic during Tuesday’s 5-3 win to pull into a second-place tie. After the Wildcats rallied to tie the score at three runs each in the bottom of the second inning, the Hornets (13-7, 9-4) came back with runs in the third and seventh innings. Cohen Garcia doubled twice, scored a run and drove in another run for the Hornets. Novato sophomore Cash Campbell was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Luke Martin was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Wildcats, while Jake Lyall doubled.
- San Marin bolstered its MCAL playoff chances with Tuesday’s 15-0 victory over San Rafael. Cole Chamberlain homered and drove in four runs for the Mustangs (13-7, 8-4), who also got a homer and a double from Sean McGrath. Dexter Jackson, Gio Brovelli, Marcos Tolliver and AJ Mazurette combined for San Rafael’s four hits. San Marin junior Tanner O’Keefe pitched five innings for the win.
- Mo Jacoby homered and doubled to drive in two runs during Branson’s 6-1 victory over last-place Terra Linda on Tuesday. The Bulls’ Cooper Tenney was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Grayson Roberts earned the win for Branson (6-13, 3-12 MCAL) with eight strikeouts through four innings. Senior Jonah Truett was 2-for-3 and scored the Trojans’ lone run. Sophomore Alex Rambo also had two hits for Terra Linda (0-18, 0-13).
Boys tennis
Top-seeded Jackson Sichel of Redwood will face No. 3 seed Chase Hoeveler in Wednesday’s MCAL singles championship at Marin Tennis Club. Sichel defeated the Bulls’ Ishwar Jayaraman, 6-2, 6-2 in Tuesday’s semifinals. Hoeveler held off No. 2 seed Tyler Byrne of Tam, 6-3, 6-4 in the other semifinal, after a tough 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over Redwood’s Alejandro Puentes in the quarterfinals.
In the doubles tournament, Wednesday’s finale will be a showdown between Branson teammates. The Bulls’ Tommie and Finn Higgins, the tournament’s second seed, will face Branson’s James Stovall and Oliver Goldman, the third seed. Stovall and Goldman upset top-seed Chris Lee and Cal Fazal of Redwood, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6, in the semifinals. The Higgins duo earned a 6-3, 6-1 semifinal win over Redwood’s Will Greenwald and Julian Montalik.
Boys golf
Terra Linda wrapped up the regular season Tuesday with a 207-235 victory over rival San Rafael at StoneTree Golf Course. Sean Madden led the Trojans (13-3) with a 37, while Derek Newhall shot a 40. Kai Payne led San Rafael with a 40. StoneTree will host the MCAL Tournament on Monday.
Micah Albers shot a 39 as the Trojans edged Marin Catholic, 205-206, on Monday. The Wildcats’ GP France was the low medalist at 38.
- Marin Academy will put its unblemished Bay Counties League record on the line against University in Thursday’s regular season finale at Peacock Gap. The Wildcats improved to 11-0 with Tuesday’s 162-251 victory over Urban behind Charlie Wilhelm’s 2-over 38 at Presidio Golf Club. Charlie Hansen carded a 40, with Dylan Siegel at 41 for Marin Academy.
Men’s basketball
Social media is reporting that The Branson School’s Jase Butler has committed to the University of Washington. Butler, an All-MCAL first-team selection this season, had earlier committed to the University of Illinois, but recently announced he had changed his mind.
