Kirstie Allsopp brands everyone who uses plug-in air freshers in their home ‘a moron’ as she faces public backlash
IT isn’t unusual to be picky about what items you use in your home, especially when it comes to cleaning product.
TV presenter and property expert Kirstie Allsopp has shocked fans by lashing out at those who use plug in air fresheners at home and even branded them ‘morons’.
While the Location, Location, Location is known for her direct approach on the Channel 4 show, her recent rant has surprised fans.
Instead of not adding the item to her weekly shop, the presenter decided to share her thoughts on and went on to claim that the popular product was ‘poison’.
Writing on X, formally Twitter, she said: “Plug in air fresheners are poison. If you use them you are a moron who is poisoning yourself, your family & your pets.”
She then pointedly added: “No reason for them whatsoever.”
However, homes expert Kirstie was far from done with her rant and she shared several related tweets over the day.
Just hours later, she would follow-up the post by revealing that she will often remove the batteries of air fresheners while out and about.
She joked: “I switch them off, or take out the batteries. I’m an air fresher terrorist.”
Unsurprisingly, her inital tweet went viral almost immediately with over 1.6 million people seeing it in less than 24 hours.
Needless to say, the post has sparked intense debate in the comments.
One follower agreed, angrily commenting: “I feel sorry for any dog or cat (or any animal) kept in a home with strong fake scents being added to rooms, a dog’s sense of smell is incredibly sensitive and room and fabric fragrances are horrendous for them to have to live in.”
Another added: “I feel the same about scented candles; load of poisonous nonsense.”
Others, however, were more than happy to use plug-in air fresheners in their home and decide to hit back at Kirstie’s comments.
“I’ve had them for years. I’m absolutely fine & so is my dog,” explained a third, saying: “I have my window open most of the day but I like the scent so I’ll keep using it thank you.”
Meanwhile, a fourth revealed that they’d struggle with an overwhelming smell of mildew and had been forced to use the plugs.
They said: “I live in a very old building that suffers from extreme damp, especially when the old moat leaks into the lower floors.
“There is simply no other way to stop the smell without the plug in air fresheners.”
To which, the presenter replied: “I’d prefer the smell of damp.”
Before you unplug your favourite Airwick air freshener, it is worth noting that most are perfectly safe to use – with experts suggesting that you turn them on for short bursts.
Those with allergies or asthma can be more sensitive to scented products, so it’s also worth opening a window after giving your home a quick refresh.
If you are at all concerned about using plug in air fresheners, you can also switch to using essential oils as chemical-free alternative.
Just maybe turn it off before appearing on Location, Location, Location.
