Journalist says Spurs could sign 26-year-old instead of Timo Werner
Journalist Ben Jacobs has said that Tottenham Hotspur could decide to make a move for Albert Gudmundsson this summer instead of taking up the option to sign Timo Werner permanently.
While Werner has undoubtedly had a decisive impact since joining Spurs on loan from RB Leipzig in January, the forward has been guilty of missing several big chances, which is an issue that has plagued him throughout his career.
The Tottenham fans are divided on whether it would be a good idea to activate the £15m option to buy the German, with some feeling that it is good value for a squad player while others believe that the Lilywhites should be setting their sights a lot higher.
Meanwhile, Spurs continue to be linked with various forwards, with Gudmundsson undoubtedly being the attacker whose name has most frequently been mentioned over recent weeks as a target for Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Various Italian outlets have reported that Spurs are locked in a three-horse race for the Genoa star’s signature with Juventus and Inter Milan (Tuttosport via Sport Witness).
Timo Werner or Albert Gudmundsson for Spurs?
Jacobs has now become the latest journalist to talk up the chances of the Iceland international heading to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
When asked about the speculation linking Gudmundsson to Spurs, he said on The Debrief Podcast: “One club to look out for is Tottenham, who are tracking the player. Juventus have also been made aware of the terms of any possible deal.
“There is some interest in Serie A and I think Tottenham from the Premier League is one to watch as well. I would keep an eye on Tottenham. If for example, Timo Werner doesn’t have that option, then they’ll be looking for that versatile sort of player.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I do not think Tottenham’s decision on Werner is likely to impact their pursuit of Gudmundsson, with the Genoa star being an extremely versatile option who can play across the front three and potentially even as a number ten in case Maddison is injured or needs a rest.
