Leeds Rhinos • Smith out ASAP
We can only envy and wonder if Heatherington is our Radrizzani, seeing what's happening at Leeds United with the 49ers takeover. If Smith is our Bielsa, witnessing a promising start akin to our run to Old Trafford, but the coaching approach becoming ever more unsustainable over time, somewhat resembling Bielsa's final year at Leeds United.
Still, the 49ers failed to win the Super Bowl in American Football and I would compare the golden era Leeds Rhinos more with the current Kansas City Chiefs.
Kevin Sinfield was our Patrick Mahomes and both teams would struggle to succeed without them. Both players required extensive scouting to be recruited by their clubs. Sinfield's leadership was unmatched in his era, while Mahomes excels not only in improvisation but also possesses a uniquely gifted throwing arm shaped by baseball practice.
Question for armchair visionaries: who would be our dream takeover?
Question for those pro-Heatherington: what should be his next steps?
From various discussions, I’m led to believe our issues in Leeds run deeper, starting at the junior level. For example in open age teams, many fit and capable former junior players don’t bother playing but still socialise at pubs after games. A friend attributes this to a waning passion for playing the game but a desire to remain involved. Those more involved with local clubs here might offer better insights, but could the intense focus on turning pro from a young age be diluting passion for those who don’t make it as pro’s and reducing the pool of overall competitive players? Is it culture? Is it attitude? Is it something else?
Regardless, it doesn’t seem we’ve produced another Golden Generation from our local clubs since the actual Golden Generation and it would be good to read some insight why.
I know someone who grew up with a lot of the Wigan players and he’s completely shocked that one star winger has made it as a pro. That Wigan and Saints hotbed does seem to be producing a lot of the Super League stars today so why haven’t Leeds been able to match?
Would we be able to cobble a super league winning team together with the players that were born and raised in Leeds but moved to play professionally elsewhere?
