Renewed push to stop drivers from passing stopped school buses
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A growing number of local districts have installed stop-arm cameras on school buses to try and stop drivers from passing stopped buses. But officials said the problem persists.
Albany County officials showed a video of two students almost getting hit by a car as they were trying to cross the street. The students were able to get out of the way just in time and safely get on the bus before the car drove away.
Officials said it is the responsibility of all drivers to keep kids safe.
"Take your time and just think about it," Albany County Exec. Dan McCoy said. "There's no rush. Just leave early for work, and you'll be okay."
Violators face fines of up to $300. Albany County leaders said they have issued about 6,000 tickets and collected more than $400,000 in fines since the start of the school year.
