STEM summer camp to be held at Charles Carroll Community Center
A six-week summer camp dedicated to science, technology, engineering and mathematics will be held at Charles Carroll Community Center on Littlestown Pike in Westminster.
The Board of Carroll County Commissioners unanimously approved a $132,000 contract with AlphaBEST Education Inc., a before- and after-school enrichment program based in Lewisville, North Carolina, to operate the STEM camp for children in kindergarten through fifth grades.
Under the contract, 70% of the revenue collected from registration will be paid to AlphaBEST and the remaining 30% will go to the county to pay for maintenance of the community center, and any associated administrative costs.
Lisa Carroll, bureau chief of recreation with the county’s Department of Recreation and Parks, said each week throughout the summer there will be a different theme. The cost to attend the day camp will be about $300, she said.
The number of children that could attend will depend on the number of counselors hired. Under state regulations there must be one counselor per 10 children, she said.
“I’m assuming it will be a full camp, so you’re looking at 30 to 50 kids,” Carroll said. “(AlphaBEST) is providing all the equipment. The only thing we are providing is the space.”
Dates for the camp are currently being determined.
More information on activities held at the Charles Carroll Community Center is posted on the Carroll County government website.
