What we know about the Missile attack on Iran
After its unprecedented attack on Israel, Iran became the target of an airstrike, the perpetrator of which has not been officially identified or confirmed. The Islamic Republic of Iran has refrained from attributing this attack to Israel, and Israel, likewise, has not officially accepted responsibility for the attack on Iran.
International media outlets, including the American network ABC, which first reported on this attack, have corroborated through informed “non-Israeli” sources that an Israeli fighter jet carried out an attack on positions within Iranian territory outside of radar range early Friday morning.
According to Al Jazeera’s report, this attack targeted at least three sites in the province of Isfahan, Iran, with the primary objective reportedly being a radar site belonging to the air defense system—a part of the protection system for the Natanz nuclear facilities. However, details regarding the extent of its destruction have not been confirmed by international media outlets.
Iran’s Ground Forces Commander referred to what is being called the “aerial attack” on the country as “suspicious flying objects” and refrained from attributing it to Israel. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Amirabdollahian, also stated in an interview with the BBC that while the Islamic Republic is investigating the attack, there is no evidence to suggest that it was carried out by Israel.
BBC has labeled this attack as a “message from Israel to the Islamic Republic of Iran” and highlighted Israel’s capability to target strategic objectives within the “depths of Iran’s territory.” Reuters also reported a similar sentiment, suggesting that Friday’s attack serves as a message to Iran that Israel is capable of targeting objectives within Iran’s borders without using aircraft or ballistic missiles.
According to Reuters, Netanyahu’s cabinet had approved a decisive attack on Iran, but in the final minutes, based on the advice of its allies, refrained from executing its plan and opted for a limited strike on Iran instead.
The Israeli government, its officials, and other official Israeli entities have not commented on the attack on Iran thus far. This comes at a time when a base belonging to the “Popular Mobilization Forces,” a group affiliated with the Islamic Republic of Iran, was targeted in northern Babil, Iraq, resulting in at least one fatality.
Iranian authorities have also not made any statements regarding this matter yet.
