DRIVERS are challenging themselves with a confusing road law brain teaser game.
An award-winning optical illusion challenges motorists to discern the different road.
The illusion, named “A Turn in the Road,” was developed by researchers at Rice University.
Kimberley D. Orsten and James R. Pomerantz entered the mind-bending puzzle as a contestent in the Best Illusion of The Year Contest.
The puzzle came in third place.
The researchers said the puzzle is complicated because it shows some repeating patterns.
“When we look at two pictures that are physically the same, they usually look the same,” they said in the puzzle’s entry.
“When they are different, they look different. Our illusions show the opposite.”
They said the puzzle has a confusing “anti-metamer” that tricks readers into believing the roads are the same.
But upon closer inspection, some readers may find a road that is different from the others.
Readers who are able to quickly differentiate images may be able to say they distinct observation skills.
In turn, those with acute vision may be able to solve optical illusions more easily than others, leading them to boast 20/20 vision.
However, 20/20 vision refers to being able to see an object that’s 20 feet away without the use of glasses or contacts, according to Cleveland Clinic.
Those who are talented at cracking brain teasers and optical illusions may have 20/20 vision but this should not be used as an official confirmation of it.
ANSWER KEY:
There are three roads that look like they’re going in two directions.
Many readers may guess the road on the right veers further than the other streets.
However, another road is different.
“Viewers see one image as odd, but it’s one of the two identical images they see as different, an illusion we call ‘false pop out,'” the researchers said in their submission.
Instead, the middle road – with similar lines and dimensions – is facing a different direction.
