2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Movie/Limited Actor: Jon Hamm (‘Fargo’) out front
Having trouble predicting who will win Best Movie/Limited Actor at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority believe the trophy will go to Jon Hamm (“Fargo”). The other potential nominees, per our racetrack odds, are Hiroyuki Sanada (“Shogun”), David Oyelowo (“Lawmen: Bass Reeves”), Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”), Andrew Scott (“Ripley”) and Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”).
As of this writing, a leading 10 out of our 13 Emmy Experts predict a victory for Hamm for “Fargo”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). He plays corrupt Sheriff Roy Tillman on Season 5 of FX’s quirky anthology series. Hamm has received 16 total Emmy nominations throughout his career for his work on “Mad Men,” “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” triumphing on his final Best Drama Actor notice for “Mad Men” in 2015.
Two other Emmyologists — Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby) and Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) — instead believe Sanada will prevail for “Shogun.” The award-winning Japanese actor embodies Lord Yoshii Toranaga, Lord of the Kanto, on the FX adaptation of NBC’s 1980 miniseries, which in turn was based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell. This would mark Sanada’s first career Emmy bid.
The remaining pundit — Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) — goes out on a limb for Oyelowo for portraying the titular character on “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” The Paramount+ program is based on the life of America’s first Black Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. Oyelowo is already a two-time Emmy nominee for producing and starring in the made-for-TV-movie “Nightingale” (2015).
Also looking strong in our Experts’ odds is Hollander for “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” He takes on the role of American novelist Truman Capote on the second installment of FX’s anthology program. Hollander previously won a BAFTA TV Award for “The Night Manager” (2017), and he claimed two ensemble trophies at the SAG Awards for “Gosford Park” (2001) and “The White Lotus” (2022).
Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Movie/Limited Actor category include Steven Yeun (“Beef”) in 2023, Michael Keaton (“Dopesick”) in 2022, Ewan McGregor (“Halston”) in 2021, Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”) in 2020 and Jharrel Jerome (“When They See Us”) in 2019. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
