'The Witcher' is ending, but season 4 won't be its last. Here's everything we know.

Neither Netflix nor the showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, has given a reason for ending the show.

But it looks more like a planned end than a cancellation, given that there are still entire seasons in the works.

"It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia," Hissrich told Netflix's online blog, Tudum.

"We're thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski's books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn't be our show if we didn't push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends."

The series is a book adaptation, so Netflix is likely not continuing past the end of the narrative in the books.

Season one of "The Witcher" was a major hit for Netflix, gaining 83 million views and inspiring the streamer to greenlight spin-off films and shows. Netflix was likely initially drawn by the popularity of the videogame adaptations of the same "Witcher" books.

However, seasons two and three failed to match up. Netflix could be looking to end the expensive fantasy series before the audience dwindles any further.

Cavill never gave a reason for his exit from the show.

Many fans have speculated that Cavill left because he would rather focus on playing Superman.

He appears in the 2022 DC movie "Black Adam," but didn't play Superman again after the franchise was handed to James Gunn for a reboot.

Other fans speculated that Cavill, who was a big fan of "The Witcher" books and games, had problems with the adaptation.

In 2021, Cavill told the Philippine Star that he struggled to find a "balance between the showrunners' vision and my love for the books," and said he asked for changes to his character in season 2.

"The things that I pushed for, it was not necessarily just more dialogue. It was bringing a more book-accurate Geralt to the screen. Because as I'm sure you know in the books, Geralt is an amateur philosopher," he said.

"He's an intellectual. He's wise and thoughtful. Yes, he's at times morose, morbid, and snarky. But it's important for me to have the character be three-dimensional."

Hemsworth has taken on the mantle of Geralt, and the main leads, Joey Batey, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allen, are set to return.

Most of the supporting cast will also return, except for MyAnna Buring, who played Tissaia, and Ed Birch, who played King Vizimir, after their characters' deaths in season three.

Season four also has some new stars.

Laurence Fishburne will play fan-favorite Geralt ally Regis, a wise vampire. Danny Woodburn will also play another fan-favorite character, the dwarf Zoltan. Sharlto Copley will join the cast as an infamous Witcher bounty hunter, Leo Bonhart, and James Purefoy will play the spy Skellen.

"The Witcher" has been slowly adapting the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, with season three taking storylines from books "Blood of Elves," "Time of Contempt," and "Baptism of Fire."

Netflix said the final two seasons would adapt the final books of the "Witcher" saga, which includes the rest of "Baptism of Fire," as well as "The Tower of the Swallow" and "Lady of the Lake."

In these books, Geralt forms an army to save his ward, Ciri (Allen), and stop the sorcerer Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu). Yennefer tries to hunt Vilgefortz on her own, and Ciri travels to a world of magical elves.

Season three ended with Geralt questing to find Ciri, believing Vilgefortz had captured her. She's actually working with a group of thieves and Geralt is on the wrong trail.

The season four logline said that Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri will stay separated in the fourth season, leading their own "groups of misfits."
