CT police officer shoots person during disturbance; investigation ongoing
Authorities are investigating after a police officer shot a person during a disturbance in Colchester Thursday.
Officers with the Colchester Police Department were called just before 6:20 p.m. to an address on Norwich Avenue on the report of a disturbance and “made contact with an individual” shortly after arriving, according to Connecticut State Police.
State police said a Colchester officer fired their gun at the individual, injuring them.
No one else in the area was injured, according to state police.
The person who was shot was taken in an ambulance to an area hospital. Their condition remains unclear.
An officer was also taken to the hospital for an evaluation, state police said.
“There is no ongoing threat to the public,” state police said in a statement.
The shooting is being investigated by the Connecticut Inspector General with assistance from state police Troop K and detectives with the Eastern District Major Crime Squad.
Under state law, Inspector General Robert Devlin Jr. must release body or dashcam footage from officer-involved shootings within 96 hours of the incident and a preliminary report naming the individuals involved.
Devlin’s office — created in the wake of the police accountability laws — is tasked with investigating any time an officer uses deadly force to determine if it was justified.
