Ioka to have press conference Monday, WBA reveal date of Ioka Vs Martinez
Over the last 24 hours or so the WBA appear to have leaked the official date for the much rumoured Super Flyweight world title unification bout between WBA "super" champion Kazuto Ioka (31-2-1, 16) [井岡一翔] and IBF champion Fernando Daniel Martinez (16-0, 9), which the WBA now list for July 7th in Tokyo.
The bout, which is expected to be officially announced on April 22nd at a press conference on Abema, which was announced earlier today, featuring Ioka is a highly anticipated bout which will pit two of the best Super Flyweight against each other in a bout that has the potential to be a sleeper fight of the year candidate.
The reason why the styles should gel so well is because Ioka is a very technical and smart fighter, with excellent body punching and countering whilst Martinez is a ultra-aggressive fighter, who comes forward with relentless aggression. Typically those styles do gel well, as the aggressor presses and the counter puncher sits in the pocket trying to make a fighter miss and pay for it, and we expect that to be the case here.
With the press conference penciled in for early next week we’re expecting full details on the show to be revealed shortly, and for the card to feature at least one major under-card bout, potentially featuring former WBC Flyweight champion Daigo Higa (21-2-1, 19) [比嘉 大吾].
Whilst the WBA do list the bout for July 7th it is worth noting that the WBA also list the stacked Ohashi card, set for May 6th, for May 7th, in what is clearly an incorrect date, so whilst the WBA are certainly reliable, it is worth noting their schedule does have errors on it.
