Revamping the area for a beautiful aesthetic that’s practical for your needs doesn’t have to break the bank.
Wendy Wang is an International Trade Specialist and owner of F&J Outdoor, an outdoor furniture cover store based in Pennsylvania.
She revealed to The U.S. Sun the affordable hacks she swears by for upgrading backyards on a budget.
ADD A POP OF COLOR
Wang revealed gardens can be eye-catching without relying on accessories to make it look colorful.
She recommended strategically placing plants of varying colors and textures to enhance the space.
“Incorporate potted plants or hanging baskets to instantly brighten up your balcony or patio,” she said.
“Choose low-maintenance options like succulents or herbs for a budget-friendly and practical touch of greenery.”
CREATE AMBIANCE
“String lights or lanterns are an inexpensive way to add a cozy, inviting atmosphere to your outdoor space,” she said.
“Look for solar-powered options to save on energy costs and make installation a breeze.”
Walmart has a large range of solar-powered lights, with prices starting from $2.74.
Customers have gushed about a lamp that’s “easy to install,” and withstands rain and wind.
UPDATE YOUR TEXTILES
“Give your outdoor area a fresh look by swapping out old throw pillows or adding an outdoor rug,” Wang said.
“These small changes can make a significant impact on the overall aesthetic without requiring a significant investment.”
Get creative and craft your own outdoor decorations using repurposed materials.

A floral design outdoor rug is currently on sale at Wayfair for $80.99.
According to the manufacturer, it is “easy to clean” and can withstand being positioned in high-traffic areas.
SEAT COVERS
Wang said it’s important to cover outdoor furniture when they aren’t in use to keep them in good condition.
“High-quality outdoor furniture covers, like our 2024 Edition Patio Rectangular Cover and 2024 Edition Patio Chair Cover, can shield your patio set from harsh weather, extending its lifespan and maintaining its appearance.
“This simple step can save you money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent replacements.”
F&J Outdoor’s Rectangular Cover is currently reduced from $62.99 to $52.99.
Their waterproof Patio Chair Cover is priced at $43.99.
How to make your backyard a little paradise
Houna Bech is an interior designer and founder of the style blog With Houna.
She revealed to The U.S. Sun five tips for transforming a drab outdoor space into a “sensory-rich little paradise.”
- Embrace nature
“Use your landscaping, trees, flowers, and organic environment as your muse,” she said.
2. Bring the inside out
“Repeat color palettes, textures, and materials so the transition between indoors and out is seamless,” she said.
3. Create zones for specific purposes
“I might design a luxurious cabana with plush loungers and vanities for alfresco makeup sessions with my girlfriends,” she said.
4. Prioritize comfort
“I’m talking cloud-like sectionals, upholstered daybeds, and oversized weather-resistant poufs you can really envelop yourself in,” she said.
5. Get creative
“Finally, turn your entire outdoor area into an artistic installation,” Bech said.
DIY DECOR
“Get creative and craft your own outdoor decorations using repurposed materials or affordable finds from discount stores,” Wang said.
“Painted mason jars, upcycled pallet furniture, or handmade wind chimes can add a unique, personal touch to your backyard oasis.”
The tip is similar to BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Mark Lane’s recommendation to repurpose old fabrics for cushion covers.
“Perhaps clean and then paint your pots and containers all the same color and introduce some new accent pieces in the same colors, such as candles, lanterns, cushions, and throws,” Lane said.
“Old woolen jumpers also make great cushion covers – different textures are key for that expensive look.”
