I’m a cash-savvy shopper but there are 5 items I NEVER buy from Lidl, including a breakfast staple that’s ‘so watery’
A CASH-SAVVY shopper has listed the five items she doesn’t bother buying from Lidl – and it also includes a much-loved British breakfast staple.
The German discount store Lidl is one of the cheapest supermarkets helping cash-strapped households make stretching their budget a little easier.
Katryn regularly shares shopping-related advice on TikTok, where she’s won close to 40k followers[/caption]But whilst its famous Middle of Lidl aisle may full of fantastic offers – and affordable essentials for a garden glow-up – one shopper, Kathryn Leech, recently revealed that not everything is worth your money, in her eyes.
According to the money-smart foodie, better known to her 39k fans on TikTok as @katsaves, there are a handful of items you may be better off leaving at the store.
Taking to her social media platform, Kathryn – who also listed ten TK Maxx buys to steer clear off – revealed which popular buys you should never buy from the popular store.
Simply… Baked Beans
One such food item she’d rather buy elsewhere included their Simply… Baked Beans, which retail for 28p a can.
However, although the tin may save you a fortune compared to the branded Heinz baked beans (an eye-watering £1.40 at Tesco), the savvy shopper reckoned the cheap price was simply ”not worth it”.
”Honestly, they’re so watery,” the TikTok user shared her verdict in the video.
Newgate Gravy Granules
What’s a scrumptious Sunday roast without a hearty gravy on top of your golden potatoes and delicious Yorkshire puddings?
Like most stores, Lidl, too are offering gravy – but according to Kathryn, she’d heard a lot of negative reviews by those who’ve tried the Newgate Gravy Granules.
The gravy granules, selling for a little over a quid, as reported by Get Surrey, are just ”terrible”, she explained in the clip.
Simply… 2 Cheese and Tomato Pizzas
Sometimes, nothing hits the spot quite like a cheesy pizza at the end of a long week.
But if you’re planning to have a movie marathon this weekend with a cheesy pizza, Kathryn advised best to get this foodie favourite from elsewhere – or at least, try a different brand.
”I know it’s cheap but you can get cheap, better pizzas anywhere else.”
Crownfield Rice Snaps
Next up in the video were Crownfield Rice Snaps, which fans of the store can purchase for 85p a box – whilst its more posh version, Kellogg’s Rice Krispies, are scanning for almost four times the price, at £3.30 for a 430g package.
But although you may save some money, Kathryn described the breakfast essential as having ”no flavour”.
”I wouldn’t even bother buying them.”
Wholegrain Wheat Bixies
If you want to cut the cost of your weekly shop, one way is to swap branded products to supermarket own-brand versions – and these Lidl Wholegrain Wheat Bixies are great for it, coming up to just a few pennies per biscuit.
However, in Kathryn’s opinion, the budget-friendly alternative to Weetabix was ”like cardboard”.
”Don’t waste your money,” the shopper urged fellow social media users.
When do supermarkets put out yellow-sticker bargains?
The time supermarkets reduce their products vary across stores.
Here’s a rough supermarket-by-supermarket guide:
Aldi
Aldi uses a red sticker to show reductions on fresh products such as bread, meat, fruit and vegetables.
This is when they have reached the last day of shelf life.
Red stickered items are most commonly found at opening and closing times.
M&S
Reduction times can vary from store to store but is most likely to occur near closing time.
Asda
Asda told Which? that yellow stickers are applied twice a day – in the morning and evening.
Co-op
Co-op told The Sun its reduced-to-clear prices are generally applied about four hours before the store closes.
Lidl
Lidl has a similar procedure to Asda and Aldi with reductions twice a day.
However individual stores may opt to reduce prices throughout the day.
Morrisons
Shoppers online have said that Morrisons does the best bargains first thing in the morning.
However, the store told Which? that there are no specific times for yellow sticker price cuts.
Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s told The Sun it’s at the store manager’s discretion whether to offer discounts.
However, shoppers have reported that the best deals are in the evening from 6pm.
Tesco
Tesco has said there is no specific time for reduction, but again most people found that prices were reduced from 6pm.
Waitrose
As with most of the other stores, Waitrose shoppers have said the best reductions are found before closing.
However the store stated that there is no specific time for yellow stickers to be applied.
