I announced my big engagement at my step-sister’s funeral – the timing couldn’t have been more perfect
A MAN has been brutally criticised for announcing his big engagement at his step-sister’s funeral after she passed away unexpectedly.
The young man, 19, explained how he decided to propose to his 20-year-old girlfriend, shortly before his step-sister, 14, died.
Although he wanted to share the wonderful news right away, the 19-year-old, who lives in a different state from his family, kept it under wraps until everyone had processed their loss.
He wrote on a post on Reddit, saying ” it didn’t feel right to announce” the engagement and he wanted to give his family and loved ones ”the space to grieve”.
He went on: “A few weeks later my girlfriend and I flew to California for the funeral.
”My entire family was there which is unusual considering we all live in different states and countries.
”It was basically a family reunion and had this been under any other circumstances, this would have been the perfect time to announce our engagement but it just didn’t feel right because everyone was down.”
After a “depressing” service, the young Romeo insisted that the mood had started to lighten when they arrived at the wake.
Figuring that since ”everyone seemed to be happy” it was the perfect opportunity to let the family and other guests know about the big event.
With this, he proceeded to call a toast and announced his engagement to his girlfriend, reported the Mirror.
However, much to his surprise, rather than receiving cheers and congratulations from everyone, the room suddenly fell silent.
He said: “A few minutes later, my step sister’s older half sister’s boyfriend asked to speak to me outside.
”We went outside where I was confronted by my step sister’s older half sister who was crying hysterically and told me that I always make everything about myself and asked me why I couldn’t just let this one day be about someone else.”
According to him, the relative and her boyfriend then demanded that the loved-up duo left and not come back – and others echoed the sentiment.
”I asked my mom and step-dad if I should leave and they coldly told me to go.”
Since then, the 19-year-old has received multiple text messages from friends and family ”chastising” him ”for ‘making a funeral all about” him – and several have even said they wouldn’t be coming to his wedding.

Totally baffled by the reaction to the ill-timed announcement, the young bloke has taken to social media to ask fellow Redditors what he did wrong.
In response, one person said: “Holy c*** why would you think that would ever be a good idea.”
A second chimed in: “I could see someone thinking this might be a good idea for 1/2 a second… but it’s definitely not.
”And the fact that your family immediately said that you always make things about you leads me to believe that this has probably been a recurring issue.”
Someone else penned: “Some advice – if you get divorced, try not to announce it at a gender reveal or something.”
