How many babies have Louisiana's most common name?
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Is your new bundle of joy or too-busy toddler carrying one of Louisiana's most popular baby names?
Experts at ourpublicrecords.org studied Social Security Card data on more than 10,000 names given to babies born across the U.S. in 2022.
The survey found that Liam was the most popular name for baby boys, and 275 parents in Louisiana chose it for their sons. It was also number one nationally, with 20,456 baby Liams born in 2022. The most popular name for baby girls was Olivia, with 212 being given that name in the state and 16,573 nationwide.
The list of Louisiana names shows that people are honoring family elders or adopting family names or names that were common in generations past, like Henry, Amelia, James, Oliver, and Charlotte, making a resurgence in popularity.
CEO of ourpublicrecords.org, Kushal Tantry, called the findings fascinating.
"These figures offer a fascinating insight into the attitudes of parents when it comes to naming their children in Louisiana. Whilst names have become more diverse and personalized over the years, reflecting the changing cultural landscape and individual preferences of parents, traditional naming practices still hold significance for many families," Tantry said.
While names that are considered more traditional top the list, plenty of creative names, such as Journee, Oaklynn, Saylor, and Ace also made the list in Louisiana.
"Zendaya is a great example of a unique name that has seen its greatest popularity in 2022 thanks to cultural inspiration. Georgina is an older, more traditional name that has also greatly increased in popularity, showing how names never really go extinct and how most names will see fluctuations in popularity over time," Kushal said.
