ASAP, formerly Waitr, ceases its food delivery operations
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- ASAP, the Lafayette-based delivery service formerly known as Waitr, has ceased operations, according to an open letter on its website.
"With a heavy heart, we share the news of the closure of our delivery and carryout business," the letter reads. "After 15 years of dedicated service, we've made the tough decision to cease operations. We write to you today filled with gratitude for your unwavering support and loyalty throughout our journey."
Waitr started at McNeese State University in Lake Charles in 2013, before moving its operations to Lafayette in 2016.
In 2019, the company announced it would lay off all of its employed drivers and move to a contract-only model, similar to Grubhub and DoorDash. The move resulted in 2,300 drivers being laid off.
It changed its name to ASAP in 2022 as part of a settlement with Waiter.com who had sued Waitr over trademark infringement. Waiter.com had been founded in 1995 and trademarked its name in 2000, 8 years before Waitr's founding.
