Gary Neville has delivered a brutal assessment of Manchester United’s performance against Brentford on Saturday.
Erik ten Hag’s side produced a disappointing display at the Gtech Community Stadium and were lucky to come away with a draw.
The Bees dominated the match having 31 shots on goal compared to United’s 11.
United appeared to have stolen a victory after substitute Mason Mount scored a 96th-minute goal, but Kristoff Ajer popped up with the equaliser to ensure the points were shared.
Gary Neville wasn’t pleased with his old team’s performance. “I watched them last night and couldn’t believe really what I was watching,” on the Gary Neville Podcast.
“I thought they would put a bit of pressure on Tottenham and Villa in the run-in. It’s actually really difficult to play that badly.
“Really, it is you know. I can’t think of any point in that game, maybe the first few minutes, where they did anything well at all.
“It was a horrible performance to the point where when Mason Mount scored, I think we may have had to start a petition to give Brentford two points back.
“It was an absolute robbery. But then Brentford scored. I can’t explain that performance – I’ve no idea where it came from.
“Very worrying that you can go to that level of low. You know you can play badly in football, you know you sometimes don’t feel quite right.
“But that was a dismal, dismal effort in an attempt to play football, in an attempt to work as hard as you possibly can. When you give the ball away, their reaction is non-existent. They really are one of the worst teams out of possession.”
Man United cannot dwell too much on the result as they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday before hosting Liverpool in Manchester three days later.
Their chances of securing a fifth-place finish are slim as they are eight points behind Tottenham Hotspur.
United will look to win all their remaining matches and finish as high in the table as possible. However, their season now hinges on success in the FA Cup.
The Red Devils claimed a stunning 4-3 quarter-final win over Liverpool last month and will face Coventry City in the last four.
Winning the game against the Championship outfit will see them take on Manchester City or Chelsea in the final at Wembley Stadium.
