LASU VICE-CHANCELLOR URGES STAFF TO EMBRACE EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

… As University Trains Workforce on Responsible Use of AI For Enhanced Productivity

In a bid to keep pace with the rapidly evolving technological landscape within the university environment, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, MNI, has called on staff of the University to keep pace with emerging technologies for improved productivity.

Olatunji-Bello made the call recently while speaking at the opening session of a two-day training on Artificial Intelligence (AI) organised by the Institution for staff across all cadres in the University. She emphasised the importance of staying abreast of technological advancements to remain relevant in the academic sphere just as she also underscored the need for continuous learning and adaptation.

Her words, “In today’s digital age, educators must embrace emerging technologies as tools for innovation and advancement. By leveraging these technologies effectively, we can revolutionise teaching methods, streamline administrative processes, and foster a conducive learning environment for our students”.

Represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof Adenike Boyo, Olatunji Bello asserted that LASU’s proactive approach to the adoption of technology underscores the University’s commitment to staying at the forefront of educational innovation.

It is also to empower staff members to navigate the complexities of the digital age and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge.
She reminded the trainees of the need to preserve LASU as a global brand, and key into emerging technologies to remain relevant among other universities of repute.

Olatunji-Bello noted that even as the Vice-Chancellor, she has also had some AI classes to be up to date with the new realities, revealing that even at the National level, NUC has commenced educating University Administrators on the prospects, features and areas of caution as regards AI.

The training coordinated by the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology of the University focused on the use of Microsoft Copilot as a working companion.  

The Lead Trainer and the Director of the LASU ICT, Prof Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin engaged participants on the practicalities of the AI tool via several lab sessions including how AI-powered tools and algorithms could automate routine tasks, analyse large datasets, and generate valuable insights to support decision-making processes with emphasis on ethical considerations and responsible usage to mitigate potential risks associated with AI implementation.
