The print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) claims that Tottenham Hotspur have to be decisive and quick if they wish to land Bologna centre-back Riccardo Calafiori next summer, adding that the defender will not come cheap.
Over the last month, a whole of Italian outlets have credited the Lilywhites with an interest in the 21-year-old, with the latest such report coming from Oggi Sport Notizie, who said a few days ago that Ange Postecoglou’s men could battle Juventus for the player next summer.
Why Tottenham are keen on Riccardo Calafiori
Gazzetta have now also named Spurs and the Old Lady as the two top contenders for Calafiori’s signature next summer.
The publication has done a profile on the youngster, pointing out that he is a ‘total’ defender, being able to feature at full-back or even slot into midfield if necessary.
That is given as the main reason why the likes of Spurs are keen on securing his services, with the outlet adding that the player’s status is likely to grow even further over recent months as it is only a matter of time before he makes his senior debut for Italy.
Gazzetta thus say that Tottenham would have to be swift next summer if they wish to sign the player and they suggest that the Premier League side might have to pay €30m (£25.6m) to land the centre-back even though Bologna signed him for just €4m (£3.4m) last summer.
Spurs Web Opinion
It is almost certain that a few more clubs will enter the race for Calafiori’s signature next summer, with the player’s reputation growing with each appearance. Tottenham will perhaps want to wrap up a deal before the start of Euro 2024 as his value could skyrocket if he does well in the tournament.
