Electoral report card: Which high-profile politicians scored high, who couldn’t keep up

All of Pakistan has its eyes on only one thing: the election 2024 result board where arch rivals PML-N and PTI with its independent candidates are battling it out, with PPP a close third (as of 9pm, Feb 9).

While it’s still unclear how the possibly historic government will be formed, Dawn.com has rounded up some of the key players and how they’ve fared in the elections where predictions are in a stand-off with surprises.

Maryam Nawaz wins NA-119, Lahore

PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz won her first-ever National Assembly seat with 83,855 votes, while PTI-backed Shehzad Farooq came in second with 68,376 votes.

Sharif brothers make gains in Lahore

Maryam’s uncle, former prime minister and PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, wasn’t far behind; he easily won the NA-123 seat from Lahore with 63,953 votes, while PTI-backed Afzal Azeem Pahat was the runner-up with 48,486 votes.

Shehbaz also won the PP-158 seat in Lahore with 38,642 votes with PTI-backed Yousuf Ali as the runner-up with 23,847 votes.

His elder brother Nawaz Sharif, who has been famously vying for a fourth term as prime minister, lost Mansehra’s NA-15. He managed 80,382 votes while PTI-backed Shahzada Mohammad Gustasif Khan claimed victory with 105,249 votes.

However, Nawaz had clinched a landslide victory in Lahore over PTI-backed Yasmin Rashid, winning 179,310 votes to her 104,485.

Hamza Shehbaz wins NA-118, Lahore II

Like father like son, PML-N’s Hamza Shehbaz added to the Sharif family’s wins in Lahore by edging out PTI-backed Aliya Hamza Malik with 105,960 votes to her 100,803 votes.

Khawaja Asif wins NA-71, Sialkot II

PML-N’s Khawaja Asif, who was former defence minister, won against PTI-backed Rehana Dar with 118,566 votes compared to her 100,272.

Javed Latif loses NA-115, Sheikhpura III

PML-N chief Javed Latif was thrashed by PTI-backed Khurram Shahzad Virk in NA-115 Sheikhupura III. Latif managed 94,144 votes compared to Virk’s 130,255.

Muhammad Hanif Abbasi wins NA-56, Rawalpindi V

PML-N’s Muhammad Hanif Abbasi took an easy win with 96,649 votes over PTI-backed Shehryar Riaz’s 82,613 votes.

Gohar Ali Khan wins NA-10, Buner

PTI leader, and also currently the face of the party with its founder behind bars, Gohar Ali Khan cruised to victory in his hometown Buner with 110,023 votes. ANP’s Abdul Rauf came second with 30,302 votes.

Latif Khosa wins NA-122, Lahore VI

In a hotly contested run, PTI-backed Sardar Latif Khosa emerged victorious over PML-N’s Saad Rafique, winning 117,109 votes over Rafique’s 77,907.

Sher Afzal Marwat wins NA-41, Lakki Marwat

PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat had a landslide victory with 117,988 votes over JUI-F’s Asjad Mehmood with 68,303 votes.

Asad Qaiser wins NA-19, Swabi

Asad Qaiser, former National Assembly speaker and another prominent face from PTI, won with 115,635 votes, while JUI-F’s Fazal Ali came second with 45,567 votes.

Omar Ayub Khan wins NA-18, Haripur

Omar Ayub Khan clinched his NA seat with 192,984 votes while PML-N’s Babar Nawaz Khan came in second with 112,389 votes.

Zain Qureshi wins NA-150, Multan III

PTI-backed Zain Qureshi, also the son of incarcerated PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi, took an easy win in Multan with 126,770 votes. PML-N’s Javed Akhtar had 76,758 votes.

Zartaj Gul Wazir wins NA-185, Dera Ghazi Khan

PTI-backed Zartaj Gul Wazir, who was the former minister of climate change, had a landslide victory with 94,881 votes over independent candidate Mehmood Qadir Khan with 32,929 votes.

Sirajul Haq loses NA-6, Lower Dir I

Jamaat-i-Islami chief Sirajul Haq took a major loss in NA-6, Lower Dir I with 56,538 votes against PTI-backed Muhammad Bashir Khan, who clinched the seat with 81,060 votes.

Noor Alam Khan wins NA-28, Peshawar I

Just weeks after joining JUI-F, former PTI leader Noor Alam Khan had a major win in NA-28 Peshawar I with 138,389 votes. PTI-backed Sajid Nawaz Khan came in second with 65,119 votes.

Fazlur Rehman loses NA-44, DI Khan

PTI leader Ali Amin Gandapur thrashed the JUI-F chief with 93,443 votes to 59,922 votes.

PPP’s Faisal Karim Kundi was the second runnerup after Rehman, with 35,567 votes.

Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui wins NA-248, Karachi Central

MQM-P convener Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui had an easy win with 103,082 votes over PTI-backed Arsalan Khalid with 86,342 votes.

Farooq Sattar wins NA-244, Karachi West

MQM-P leader Dr Farooq Sattar added to the party’s stronghold in Karachi with 20,048 votes over PTI-backed Aftab Jahangir with 14,073 votes.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari wins NA-196, Qamber Shahdkot and NA-194, Larkana

PPP maintained its stronghold in Sindh as party leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari clinched two major wins.

He won in NA-196 with a landslide 85,370 votes, while Nasir Mehmood from JUI-P came in second with 34,449 votes.

In NA-194, the Bhutto scion won with 135,112 votes over JUI-F’s Rashid Mehmood Soomro with 35,311 votes.

Asif Ali Zardari wins NA-207, Shaheed Benazirabad

As expected, former president Asif Ali Zardari had a landslide win in Shaheed Benazirabad with 146,989 votes, while Sardar Sher Muhammad Rind Baloch, a PTI-backed independent candidate, was the runner-up with 51,916 votes.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf wins NA-52 Rawalpindi I

PPP’s Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, who was former speaker of the National Assembly, won with 112,265 votes over PTI-backed Tariq Aziz Bhatti, who had 91,547 votes.

Syed Ali Musa Gilani wins NA-151, Multan IV

A power clash between the Gilani and Qureshi families in the City of Saints was won by PPP-P’s Syed Ali Musa Gilani, who clinched 79,080 votes. PTI-backed Meher Bano Qureshi, daughter of incarcerated PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi, lost the Multan seat with 71,649 votes.

Mahesh Kumar Malani wins NA-215, Tharparkar II

PPP-P’s Mahesh Kumar Malani took an easy win in Tharparkar II — from where he became the first non-Muslim to win a general seat in the NA. He won with 132,061 votes over Arbab Ghulam Rahim of the Grand Democratic Alliance, who had 113,346 votes.

Jahangir Khan Tareen loses NA-149, Multan II

Founder of the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party Jahangir Khan Tareen took a huge blow in Multan against PTI-backed Malik Aamir Dogar. The former PTI leader only managed 50,166 votes compared to Dogar’s 143,613.

Pervez Khattak loses NA-33, Nowshera

PTI-Parliamentarians founder Pervez Khattak (ex-PTI member who served as the party’s KP chief minister earlier) lost Nowshera’s NA-33 seat by a massive 66,000-vote margin to Syed Shah Ahad Ali Shah, a PTI-backed independent candidate. According to the ECP’s provisional results, Shah bagged 93,429 votes while the former KP chief won 26,574 votes.

Aimal Wali Khan loses NA-25, Charsadda II

ANP leader Aimal Wali Khan took a major loss in NA-25 Charsadda II with 67,876 votes while PTI-backed Fazal Muhammad Khan took the win with 100,713 votes.

Akhtar Mengal wins NA-261 (Surab-Kalat-Mastung), loses NA-264 Quetta

Former Chief Minister of Balochistan won his Surab-Kalat-Mastung seat with 3,404 votes over PPP’s Sardar Sanaullah Zehri came in second with 2,871 votes.

However, he had a narrow loss in the Quetta seat to PPP’s Jamal Khan Raisani, who was former caretaker minister. Mengal had 9,929 votes to Raisani’s 10,678.

Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan loses both NA-53 and NA-54, Rawalpindi

Former leader of the opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, who contested as an independent candidate, took a serious blow in Rawalpindi — twice.

He was second runner-up both times, managing 44,072 votes in NA-53 compared to 72,006 votes from PML-N’s Raja Qamar Islam. In NA-54, he managed a mere 19,093 votes compared to independent candidate Aqeel Malik, who won the seat with 85,912 votes.

Abdul Hakeem Baloch wins NA-231, Karachi

A close battle in NA-231 (Malir III) saw PPP’s Abdul Hakeem Baloch edge win by a slim margin against PTI-backed Khalid Mahmood Ali, with 43,634 votes to 43,245.
