It’s Starting To Get Ugly For Bears HC Matt Eberflus
Today is Tuesday, and there haven’t been any firings within the Bears coaching staff. Matt Eberflus, and his staff are maintaining a positive front by consistently stating that everything is “on track” and that they will resolve their issues soon. However, I personally doubt that he genuinely believes that. It seems like standard coach speak to me. Since the 0-3 start, I decided to briefly review his performance since joining Chicago. Upon doing so, I’ve come to the realization that he is in a rather exclusive group.
Matt Eberflus By The Numbers
After coaching 20 games in Chicago, Matt Eberflus has only won 3 of them, resulting in a winning percentage of just .150. This makes him the least successful coach in Chicago Bears history. Surprised by this, I tweeted out a poll on Twitter (yes, I’m still calling it that) to gather fans opinions on which of the four listed coaches below they considered the worst in Bears history.
Since the Bears fired Lovie Smith, who had a 10-6 record, there have been four coaches who have taken the helm: Marc Trestman, Matt Nagy, John Fox, and Matt Eberflus. Currently, the poll above has gathered more than 10,000 votes. Now, let’s see where each of these coaches currently stands.
- Matt Eberflus (47.1% of the votes)
- Marc Trestman (34.2%)
- Matt Nagy (9.7%)
- John Fox (8.9%)
If you’re looking for the final results, make sure to visit the poll tomorrow, as the results will be official at 8:41 AM CST on Wednesday.
Did Bears Fans Get It Right?
The recent bias is probably a significant factor in these results, but if we look at the statistics, Matt Eberflus appears to be the least successful among the four coaches. While it’s true that he took over the Chicago Bears during a complete rebuild, things don’t seem to be improving much in his second year, with the team currently at 0-3 and no clear signs of a victory coming soon. I don’t have any issues to the poll’s results, but I do think that each of the coaches mentioned has their fair share of flaws. Let’s compare them all side by side.
Coach | Wins | Losses | Winning % | Seasons |
Marc Trestman | 13 | 19 | .406 | 2 |
John Fox | 14 | 34 | .292 | 3 |
Matt Nagy | 34 | 31 | .523 | 4 |
Matt Eberflus | 3 | 17 | .150 | 2 (Hopefully that’s it) |
However, considering the current trajectory of the team, Eberflus might end up being remembered as one of the Bears worst hires.
