Round Up: SRNC Germany 2023

The unspoken agreement between student riders is that nothing ever tops a German SRNC. And, once again, this was the case with the spectacular event hosted by the German Student Riders on the grounds of the Luhmühlen International Horse Trials.

The event turned into something much more than a competitive student riding competition, with the organisers providing an array of entertainment for everyone to enjoy. From bull riding to bouncy castle, light show to local hunt demonstration; there were even miniature ponies who graced the winners’ circle with their presence.

A high standard of horses meant an equal battle between the nations throughout all phases of the competition, and the results showed a widespread distribution of talent among the nationalities. The 15 team capacity of this event was readily welcomed as it granted many new riders the opportunity to compete on international mixed teams and gain valuable experience towards future team appearances.

It was Germany’s Annika Dechert claimed the individual combined title on home turf, with Great Britain’s Alfie Marshall narrowly missing out on prime podium position after semi-final appearances in both dressage and show jumping. Team mates Di Bevan and Alexa Palmer, who just missed out semi-final appearances themselves, ensured that it was Great Britain who took home the team combined title. This win provides them with valuable points towards qualification for this year’s Gold League during World Finals.

Our trio of veteran student riding judges provided much amusement all weekend, to riders and supporters alike, both inside and outside the judges boxes. Gerd Küst (GER), Michel van Gerwen (BEL), and Eric Smiley (IRL) – it was an honour to have you with us once again.
