Crime spree leaves three dead in South Bay
SAN JOSE — Two people were run over and killed and two others were critically injured in separate stabbings in San Jose, while a fifth person was stabbed to death in Milpitas — all apparently by the same suspect — on Thursday afternoon, police said.
A suspect was arrested near the scene of the fatal stabbing in Milpitas, according to the Milpitas Police Department. The suspect’s name was not released Thursday.
The rampage began around 3:10 p.m. in San Jose when the first stabbing was reported at Kooser Road and Dellwood Way. The second stabbing was reported roughly 20 minutes later in the 1800 block of Hillsdale Avenue.
The victims were taken to area hospitals, where they were listed in critical condition, said San Jose police Sgt. Jorge Garibay.
Around 4:10 p.m., the same suspect intentionally ran over two people in a parking lot in the area of 16th and East Santa Clara streets, Garibay said. Both died of their injuries.
Garibay said there were “a lot of incidents that occurred throughout the city that we are still trying to piece together.”
Another stabbing was reported around 4:30 p.m. in a shopping center parking lot near the 400 block of Jacklin Road in Milpitas. The victim was taken to an area hospital, where they died of their injuries.
“Investigators believe the crimes committed in San Jose and Milpitas may be related to the same suspect,” the Milpitas Police Department said in a news release.
San Jose police said the suspect left the scene of the second stabbing in the victim’s car and hit a pedestrian. The pedestrian’s injuries were described as not life-threatening.
Additional details about the various cases, including a possible motive, were not immediately available.
There was initially some confusion over whether all three stabbing victims had died, with Milpitas police indicating that San Jose police were investigating two homicides. That was after San Jose police said they were investigating two stabbings but before they revealed two people had been run over and killed in the city.
