A CT teen was asleep in a stolen vehicle. The arrest was his second involving a stolen car
A 17-year-old boy is facing multiple charges after he was found asleep in the driver’s seat of a stolen vehicle in Hamden Wednesday morning and got into a brief struggle with police.
The Hamden Police Department was dispatched to the area of Cherry Ann Street for a report of a suspicious motor vehicle at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday. The person who called in the report said there was a white Hyundai parked with a man asleep in the driver’s seat, according to police.
As officers arrived at the scene, they were advised that the license plate number on the Hyundai came back to a stolen vehicle out of North Haven. One officer observed that the ignition to the vehicle was damaged, and there was a USB cable attached to it, police said.
After a second officer arrived, a brief struggle ensued and officers were able to take the 17-year-old from Hamden into custody, according to police.
Police allege there was an earlier incident with the same teen in a different stolen motor vehicle. According to police, the teen was reportedly driving erratically on the sidewalks at a high rate of speed through the ACES Whitney High School parking lot at 130 Leeder Hill Road. The vehicle was later recovered in New Haven.
The teen was arrested for both incidents. He was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, operating without a license and reckless driving for the incident on Leeder Hill Road. He is also facing charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, interfering with police, possession of burglar tools and third-degree burglary for the incident on Cherry Ann Street.
The teen also had an active take-into-custody order, according to police, and was transported to Superior Court for Juvenile Matters in Bridgeport.
