Horror moment woman plunges to her death down airport lift shaft after forcing open wrong set of doors
THIS is the horrifying moment a woman plunged to her death down a lift shaft after forcing open the wrong set of doors.
Airport staff found the body of Aisiah Sinta Dewi, 38, at the bottom of the lift shaft after they were called to investigate reports of a foul smell.
CCTV footage from inside the lift showed Ms Dewi’s final moments before the horror plunge at Kualanamu Airport in Medan, northern Indonesia, on April 24.
She was reportedly was on her way to meet her niece at the check-in area.
Footage showed her calmly walking into the double-sided lift before looking at her phone.
She appeared confused when the lift stopped with the doors facing her still closed.
Unaware the doors behind her had opened, she panicked and pushed the emergency buttons while trying to open the closed doors.
Ms Dewi had reportedly called her niece to tell her she was trapped just as she forced open the closed doors and plunged down the lift shaft.
She was found three days later after a foul stench was reported near the elevator and airport staff were called to investigate.
Her body was recovered after a five-hour operation.
The victim’s devastated brother, Raja Hasibuan, said there was “poor elevator security” and didn’t believe his sister was at fault.
He said: “We asked for the video from the elevator because it was there that we lost contact with her.
“This is an international-level airport.
“How are safety standards like this? And the response from the staff was very, very unsatisfactory.”
A spokesman for the airport told CNN Indonesia the lift was running normally – but did not say when the checks had been carried out.
Ms Dewi’s body has been sent to a local hospital for a post-mortem.
The North Sumatra Ombudsman office reportedly criticised airport authorities for alleged neglect and the airport’s slow response to Ms Dewi’s family’s plea for help.
