Meet The Pro-Life Florida Legislator Behind the Abortion Ban to Save Babies
New Florida state Rep. Jennifer Canady boldly defended the rights of unborn babies during her campaign last fall.
And now that she is in office, the Lakeland Republican is making good on her promises to voters.
The Ledger reports Canady is one of the lead sponsors of the Pregnancy and Parenting Support Act (Florida House Bill 7), pro-life legislation that could save tens of thousands of unborn babies’ lives every year.
The bill would protect unborn babies by banning most abortions once their heartbeat is detectable, about six weeks of pregnancy. Exceptions would be allowed for rape, incest and cases when the mother’s life is at risk or to avert “serious risk of substantial and irreversible physical impairment,” as well as fatal fetal anomalies.
Additionally, the bill would expand support services to pregnant and parenting mothers, prohibit state tax dollars from being used to pay for abortion travel and ban mail-order abortion drugs.
“I am interested in making sure that we carefully consider ways that we can be impactful in saving lives and taking care of women,” she told The Ledger in August. “So I am pro-life, and I also believe that we have a responsibility to support crisis pregnancy ministries, to look for ways to meet the very real needs that women and their families face.”

A mother of two and a teacher at Lakeland Christian School, Canady is the wife of Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Canady, a strong conservative. The court currently is considering a challenge to the 15-week abortion ban and pro-abortion groups likely will challenge the heartbeat bill if it passes, as expected, but pro-life advocates have strong hopes the court will uphold the legal protections for unborn babies.
Jennifer Canady’s strong pro-life stance provides even more hope. She emphasized her commitment to “defending the rights of the unborn” and “standing up for the sanctity of life” throughout her campaign.
If the heartbeat bill passes, tens of thousands of unborn babies could be saved from abortion every year and mothers and fathers would have access to support to help them raise healthy families. Currently, abortions are legal for any reason up to 15 weeks in Florida, and 82,192 unborn babies were aborted last year alone, according to state health statistics.
But with Republicans leading the state legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis, a pro-life Republican, promising to support pro-life bills, there is hope for the future of unborn babies in Florida.
