Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin SLAMS Aberdeen fans and says he was hit by a COIN as anger spilled over at Tannadice
JIM GOODWIN says he was hit by a COIN during Dundee United’s defeat to former club Aberdeen this evening.
The Tannadice boss was in charge of the Dons just a matter of weeks ago.
But their poor form saw him SACKED and he pitched up at SPFL rivals Dundee United this week.
He was thrown in at the deep end with the first match of his tenure coming AGAINST his former club – and the Irishman was given a frosty welcome by the visiting fans even before the game kicked off.
His pre-match interview was interrupted by shouts from the crowd and the atmosphere turned sour during the game, he says.
Goodwin claimed he was STRUCK by a coin as he dodged missiles lobbed his way.
He revealed a half-time pie and a supporters’ drink were chucked from the stand.
The ex-Dons boss believes it will be dealt with but criticised the reaction a “a small few” in the travelling Red Army.
He said: “It was disappointing, but I wasn’t expecting a warm reception.
“Obviously when you are sacked from a club the finger of blame is always at the manager and the fans are not slow in letting you know.
“But I did my best at Aberdeen and gave my all each day I was in there. I was as desperate for success as they were.”
Goodwin was fired after a humiliating Scottish Cup exit to Darvel and a 6-0 thrashing by Hibs which proved the final straw.
He told BBC Scotland: “I’m not sure that me not being a good enough manager for them at the time warrants coins being thrown at me – one of them hit me on the top of my head.
“I had a pie chucked at me at half-time and a cup of juice.
“It’s extremely disappointing and it’s disappointing for Aberdeen as a football club.
“It’s a fantastic club, very well supported and the travelling support is incredible but there’s always that minority – a small few of, idiots really, who drag the rest of that club down with them.
“I’m sure it will be dealt with no doubt.
“But it was extremely disappointing. You’re standing on the touchline trying to do your job and at the same time you’re trying to dodge these coins that are raining down on top of you.”
Goodwin’s unsavoury start to his United career was mirrored on it as his side went down 3-1 and remain rooted to the bottom of the Premiership.
Despite the defeat the new boss believes he saw positives in the loss but admitted every game, from now on is a ‘must-win’ if the Arabs want to ease their relegation fears.
